I think you view the world in an idealistic, romanticized way where the right, ethical thing is done in all situations. I'm sorry, but I don't share that view. I stand by my principles and always do the right thing for myself, but I learned that some battles just aren't worth fighting.

I agree with you that racists shouldn't be accommodated. I just don't agree that it is always the best decision. Pick the battles that are really worth fighting over.

My opinion is that the hospital was trying to avoid external conflict with the patient. Unfortunately, that created internal conflict with its employee. What's tragic is that the hospital probably had more legal ground to stand on had they not accommodated the racist father, but that had the potential to blow up and become a bigger problem that they tried to avoid altogether.

This isnt a drive thru...If you go to a hospital, you are gonna get taken care of by which ever staff is available/free to work...regardless of race, creed, etc...

Its one thing to ask if someone is totally incompetent...and its another thing to ask for someone else based on race...society can write on a nice little paper that racism doesn't exist, but its rampant...and tools like this guy gets away with it, b/c people are willing to accommodate him...The charge nurse shouldve said F U to the guy and let him and his baby get the heck out of the hospital...Lack of common sense is gonna cost the nurse manager her job and put innocent staff out of work once the hospital goes belly up...

what battle are you defending?? You claim to be picking and choosing a battle??? but what exactly is it...this isnt a drive through...pick your toppings on your burger...this is human life...

A Racist patient or a disgruntled(and one with legal basis 2 sue) employee

one more point...is that by refusing the racist father...you out him as the "lone" racist and would be applauded by society for standing up...by accommodating the racist, the hospital has embarrassed itself, and its "white" staff unfairly get painted as racists

If you want to argue that said black nurse is the only one who could care for the Nazi's kid, go right ahead. I assume you have proof for that claim?

We do allow patients to make decision. Whether they should have surgery or not, what kind of care they receive, and so on. The fact that a man uses racist ideals in order to formulate his decision is no more relevant than one who uses religious ideals to decide his care.

Like I said, he can make the decision to deny his child a nurses care. He is not allowed to make the decision of who the nurse is. That's the hospital's decision. The hospital should not allow racism to make their decisions.

If he does deny the child a nurses care, then the hospital can call child protective services because of the parent's willful neglect. But the man is allowed to make that choice.

The right ethical isn't done in all situations. I'm under no illusions that it happens that way. But it should be done in as often as possible.

To me an upset parent who makes a scene because they are a racist is a battle worth fighting. That's one I would pick and choose.

I do understand why they might choose to avoid any confrontation and not want to have an issue. I just think it's the wrong choice for them to make.

This discussion isn't about what ideals he uses to make personal decisions, this is about him reflecting those ideals on the public, and the hospital complying, which is NOT acceptable.

Tell that to people who know history and have experienced those adversities even today..

Is there any particular reason you don't like black people? Please elaborate.

Point was, you don't have to take special care not to offend black employees more so than any other employees, your assumption of such was what I was pointing out.

Racism against members of any community is wrong, as a managerial tactic it's illegal. Indirectly attacking other posters instead of actually rebutting their arguments, and instinctively discrediting them due to their race is dickish and cowardly, but, from you, ultimately predictable.

Literally nothing to offer but potshots at black posters; honestly, dude, grow the hell up.

I don't get what your argument is. The patient/guardian has the right to refuse. We can't "make" the patient/guardian do anything.

As to why I would accommodate the request, I've said it several times: The PATIENT is priority #1, and I'd accommodate to ensure the baby gets the best possible care. If the guardian DC's the patient AMA because of my refusal to accommodate, the patient isn't getting any care at all, is it? That might be fine with you so your pride isn't injured or whatever, but I prefer to sleep at night. My duty is to my patients, end of story.

IMO It was not totally obvious O J did it.
But honestly. . . to me it was crazy how many people like yourself were down on O J
Then turn around and give the Barettas, Spectors and Polanski's of the world all the benefit of the doubt in the world.

I don't comment on things that don't require comment.
I am not Quannel X. Check any R KElly thread and you will find me there hating on him. [like Polanski]

Someone has to be the counterbalance

    Check this:

    See this is an example
When you are a minority . . . and there are options of who should be offended
    or disrespect .or hurt
you always find yourself on the 'lesser of two situations' side

    Baretta?

As to Spector and Polanski, it is pretty clear to me they are dirty. Zimmermann as well.

So don't make stuff up about "people like yourself" - which, by the way, is another example of your bias. "People like yourself" = non-black people?

The baby is in NICU. You realize that right? Not exactly like you can go around shopping hospitals. If they can reasonably accomodate your request they will. They may not be able to provide everyone with a specific doctor. They may have to say that doctor isn't available. A black nurse dealing with a racist could certainly lead to conflict of interest that the hospital would prefer to avoid.

Even in my job, we've acquiesced to client's requests for male accountants to be in charge of their accounting, and we don't have a responsibilty to them like the hospital does.

How does that clearly show she was negatively impacted? Seeking financial gain doesn't mean she was negatively impacted. I'm not saying she wasn't offended. She very well may have been. I wouldn't blame her at all for feeling that the hospital manager should have defended her.
