Police: Snowball fight led to girl's shooting

Monday, February 24, 2003 Posted: 11:03 PM EST (0403 GMT)

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (AP) -- A man whose daughter was hit with a snowball by a group of girls returned to the scene and opened fire with a gun, critically wounding a 10-year-old youngster, police said.

Joseph Best, 32, was arrested Monday and jailed on charges including attempted murder.

The victim was in critical condition with a head wound.

Best's daughter was hit with a snowball as she and her friends walked past a group of girls having a "friendly snowball fight" Sunday, police Capt. Charles Bloom said.

A scuffle then broke out among the dozen or so girls, who ranged in age from 10 to 15. The groups soon parted ways, but Best returned with an older daughter and another brawl erupted, this time between adult relatives of both groups, Bloom said.

Police broke up that fight, but said Best came back again hours later, leaned out the passenger side of a moving car and fired at least five shots into the group of children still playing on the street. Authorities were trying to determine who was driving.

Police said the girl who was shot had been inside during the scuffles.

"This little girl had nothing to do with anything. She wasn't involved in the fight," Bloom said. "He just seemed to be randomly shooting into the crowd."

It could not be immediately determined Wednesday if Best had a lawyer.

    I can't believe this f*ckin' guy.

Maybe not a shooting, but what would it have prevented? When there are idiots like this out there, they will do something regardless. The only thing that may have been different is the headline:

"Police: Snowball fight led to girl's stabbing"
"Police: Snowball fight led to girl's beating"

It has nothing to do with the gun and everything to do with the person involved. I don't think gun control keeps theis girl out of the hospital, Joseph Best control is the only thing that prevents her from being seriously injured.

Has anybody seen the documentary Bowling for Columbine? To me, being a European, it answered a lot of questions about America. The percentage of people owning a gun, the way you can get one, ratio of people shot by one compared to other countries, it’s unbelievable.

And there is also one other thing ( I should maybe post it some in other topic, but I think this is very related). Majority of Americans live in constant fear. Fear that is being pumped by government and media ( specially with the new government), with all the fake alarms of some biological and nuclear treat, news that show mostly crime scenes. With fear is the easiest to control people, and results you can see in case like this when people flip out and their first reaction is violence.

Ah, well, no. I’m sorry if it sounded like I was trying to lecture you. I’ll try to stay on the Rockets forum in the future (and follow Nachbar’s progress).

I think Bowling for Coiumbine raised more questions than it actually answered.

BTW, this is ridiculous. I hope he gets life...no parole.

Nothing said in the media in has led me to feel I needed to carry my guns more than I usually do? When the planes were slamming into the builings on Sept 11th, I did not lock my doors and load all of my guns. Nor do I think the the terror level being raised to yellow provoke Joseph Best to shoot the little girl.

...damn the no edit, that is in no way an attack on you, I am just saying I do not think the media is to blame. As many people that do have guns here in the US, its a very very small percentage that make us all seem like redneck vigilante freaks.

It did not take guns to hijack the planes that killed thousands of people, and I do not think box cutters are outlawed.

Those people will not be any different if they do not have guns, they will just find another way to carry out their acctack.

To hell with gun control, we need people control...I have many guns, and about 10,000 rounds...(btw, I control my guns!) I also have no fear, as I am responsible...I know emotions and guns don't mix...In fact, millions of gun owners know this as well...
This is one nut...and we all know one nut can make a lot of noise...Don't listen to the noise.

btw, has anyone picked up a Beretta CX4 carbine yet? (my next one...)

    Rox,

We know you are a responsible gun owner. However, if guns were harder to buy, a lot of these crimes would be harder to commit.

No one wants to outlaw them, just have them registered, and make sure that the person that is buying them is level headed.

    1) Criminals are not going to Carters Country, Ammo Dump, or Collectors Firearms to buy guns

    2) They have serial numbers, and basically are registered. I sold a gun 5 years ago, and recently the police dept called me to ask about the gun that fortunately I kept the bill of sale from when I sold it. I had sold it to some one and it was used in a crime. The gun had been stolen (which is often the case in crimes) from the person I sold it to and he did not report it stolen. When you sell a gun, it stays registered to the person who originally purchased it.

So if you would like to change the way in which they are registered or tracked, then I have no problem with that, but the bottom line is the guns will be found by criminals, and it usually is not in an honest fashion. Nothing can be done to prevent shootings unless all guns were ordered destroyed, and that will never happen.
