I thought for certain this would have been posted, the interview by Dan Rather with Saddam will be on CBS at 5:30.

According to some former ambassadors, as well as UN members, because of the way 1441 is worded not complying with Blix's demand to destroy the missiles could "pull the rug out" from under Russia, France and Germany's attempts to extend inspections.

In an exclusive interview with CBS News Anchor Dan Rather, Saddam Hussein denied Iraq's al-Samoud missiles were in violation of United Nations mandates, and indicated that he will resist U.N. demands that they be destroyed. Saddam also challenged President Bush to a debate.

The Iraqi president flatly denied that the missiles exceed the range limit established by the U.N. He also indicated he does not intend to destroy them, as demanded by chief U.N. weapons inspector Hans Blix.

Blix had set a March 1 deadline for at least a pledge by the Iraqis to destroy the missiles.

On the topic of the debate, Saddam proposed a live, international television and radio encoutner about the looming war, Saddam envisions the debate as being along the lines of U.S. presidential campaign debates.

Responding to Saddam's debate proposal, White House spokesman Ari Fleischer tells CBS News Correspondent Mark Knoller that it's "not a serious statement."

Fleischer said, "This is not about a debate. This is about disarmament and complying with the worlds instructions that Iraq disarm."

As for Saddam's denial of possession weapons of mass destruction, Fleischer said Saddam "is not facing reality on the issue of the al-Samoud missiles, why would his other statements have creditability?"

Fleischer said it would be more helpful to the world if Saddam engaged in disarmament and not debates.

Wow. I guess we will now really find out if media conglomerates really control the world. Think of the ratings for this debate! The Superbowl would look like a cooking show rerun! :D

seriously, what's left to argue here. the guy is literally saying, "i will not disarm...and the UN will do nothing about it." what is left to argue? how does this get any simpler? when do germany and france say, "wow...it appears he really isn't serious about disarming...maybe we better do something?"

I say, agree to a debate, set a specified place, when Saddam shows up, have a sniper take him out...

Saddam's out of office, no war, end of story....

Well, no one ever accused Saddam of being a genius...

I would dearly love to see a Bush-Saddam debate before Saddam ceases to menace the world with his presence, though. I would pay money to see that.

That's what I'm talking about! Pay-per-view! We could single-handedly rescue the economy with one 90-minute debate!

Dan's the Man again! I remember 'ol Dan reporting in Houston about Hurricane Carla. And now he's talking to Saddam in Baghdad. I wonder if it'll be one of his impersonators. (Saddam... not Dan.;))
Will Dan be blindfolded and taken to a secret place? We'll see shortly.

Now, we go to the UN and say, "Look, this guy is blatantly refusing to cooperate and disarm - there's no denying that now. We have to DO something". Then France and Germany shoot down the proposal that Britian just introduced, stating their belief that inspections will work if just given more time. And then we go to war anyway.

    Seriously.

then they truly are the unconvincable. there is no amount of evidence that would lead france and germany to actually enforce the order signed by the UN security council...or the 16 orders that precedeed it. unreal.

Hell, if Rather is a true patriot, he should ask for a second interview and take out Saddam himself.

Maybe Saddam will agree to a match with W at this year's WrestleMania!

    Bombs over Baghdad.

Seriously, its easy to read what he will end up doing. He will resist the destroying of those missiles until the last minute then do it to contiue toying with the UN. I personally think that having them shows they lied and is a violation of the resolution, and thus that is grounds to begin.

There is more than the goal of disarming here, and the other goal is a regime change. This is the time.

Wait for the Blix deadline on the missile destruction to actually be ignored by Iraq and proceed from there.

After the deadline has passed...........the responses from Chirac & Schroeder will be interesting. Would they still be advocating their UN blue hat troops plan from the other week?

I want to hear more about it, but like I said, there were former ambassadors as well as others that were stating this refusal could be enough to kill France and Germany's opposition. They can veto action to a point but beyond that there is specific language that prevents them from being able to veto, and this seems to be one of those instances. That being said, Saddam will likely comply once he feels action is a step closer.

I still can't believe that today's proposed resolutions will not even be voted on until March 14 or 15.

those of you who oppose military action for this...what now? do you see how silly this is getting? do you see the possibility of the perception of irrelevance for the united nations?
