Is 60Hz refresh rate good enough for sports and video games?

If you have to ask the question, you probably won't notice the difference.

Says the guy who puts duct tape on an electric meter thinking it's a water pipe.

Actually my parents have an older LG LCD tv that is absolutely ****ty for live sports. Motion blur like crazy....

I don't know the specs of that TV, which is why I asked about 60hz.

Just a heads up that this deal will end tomorrow. SO it probably isnt a deal to you. Just wanted to let you know. You know, because it's not immune to changing circumstances and all.

I had a 40" Sony LCD 60Hz which worked beautifully for me and I watched NBA games on it all the time. Maybe the fact that it was a Sony made it less Sh!tty. But I have heard other people much like in your example of a terrible sporting tv experience on 60Hz.

Toshiba seems to be a legit company

The general rule is that once you get above 40"-42" you want 120hz because you will notice the difference, especially for quick action like sports, video games, some movies, etc.

Seeing how this is a 50" I would invest a slight bit more money to get a much better TV.

    For example:
This TV was $550 this week (47" 120hz LED):

There was a 50" Plasma LG Smart TV 120hz for $600 at Frys this past week

Absolutely NEVER buy a 120hz LCD tv.. the 120hz is the type which turns movies into 'soap operas' for lack of a better term. That particular refresh rate is awful when watching movies. Sports, games, it's ok. But I would choose a 60 over a 120 any day. Or a 240, or better yet, a plasma at 600. But stay away from the 120's unless you either don't plan to watch movies or you don't care that they will look like total garbage on it.

And in support of the OP's deal: I have a 47" Dynex 60hz 1080p as a bedroom TV, and it has worked flawlessly, and there are no issues at all watching sports, movies or playing games. I even have a computer hooked up to it to use as a monitor as well, and it works great for that too. So I can tell you from experience that a large 60hz set is just fine. I wouldn't necessarily want it as my main tv as the centerpiece to a nice home theater, but as a regular tv, it's fine.

Nero, you can change the settings on the TV to stop the Soap Opera look. I've had to do it to all of my LED's.

I hadn't heard that, that is interesting if it works. Someone ought to tell every retailer in America because they put them out there and they look baaaad.. lol

I don't have a 120 myself, but it would be interesting to fiddle with one in a store some time to see if the soap opera effect indeed goes away satisfactorily.

Agreed about the 120hz vs 60hz. 120 is just too weird, especially when gaming, I simply can't game on a 120hz LED... and like you said, movies look like soap operas, it is "too clear" for a lack of a better term.

my sony 40" LED 120Hz has motionflow 240Hz (immitation 240Hz, not real 240Hz) and it plays movies, games, sports flawlessly

The HZ has is not what to look at for for gaming, look at the response time. You want to have 5ms or lower response time for gaming for no lag/no motion blur...the lower the better. 60 Hz is fine....120hz-240hz is marketing hype except for 24fps movies.
