Sent my resume to 25+ companies a few days ago, have received no reply as of yet. How long do they usually contact you if they're interested? Most of the jobs I viewed over at indeed.com, careerbuilder, and others require experience. How am I supposed to find an entry level job? My brother said use recruiters, but I don't know which one to use just yet. I am an industrial engineer with a foreign degree, by the way. Anyone want to hire me? And before anyone belittles my degree, I already have a plan for that. I just need to find that first job so I can work my way up. I actually considered working as a technical writer at an engineering firm, sent my resume to those two companies, but still the same-- no response yet. Any tips and suggestions? Thanks.
I would think an engineering degree (foreign or not) would get you an entry level job very easily. Look for a company that does job placement for engineers specifically.
Yeah, it's tough being the weakest link in engineering. But I'm willing to put my heart into it and become successful. I just need to know what to do to get that first job.
Like you said keep looking. Network as much as you can. Use all your contacts. It's your best bet to get in the door.
It'll be tough for Industrial Engineering jobs, there just isn't any manufacturing in houston per say. Im a Chem E, there are plenty or jobs for my discipline. Do you need sponsorship? That might be a factor in why you aren't getting calls. But keep at it, i'm sure you can find a job. Good luck!
Was your program ABET accredited? If not, consider applying for a graduate degree. You should be able to get an internship fairly easily, then use your experience with that company to tailor your resume to a prospective employer. Without connections or significant experience, it will be difficult for you to get a full time position.
What do you mean by sponsorship? Like referrals? I have three but only one is really legit. So industrial engineering is only for manufacturing? I wish I could talk to an IE here, or anywhere. I don't know anyone who is.
It is not ABET accredited, I plan to take the FE exam this October then in a few years the PE exam. Do I really have to apply for a graduate degree? Don't know if I have the time and money for that.
Whoa, never thought I'd find a green archer in Clutchfans ^^ I graduated from the same university with a Computer Science degree. Most IE's I know are into manufacturing industries working as schedulers/planners/sap super users/capacity planners etc etc. I knew someone who shifted to programming if thats your thing. Hang in there and good luck job hunting!
Lol at your username outlier and you being an industrial engineer. Industrial engineer = outlier. Sorry, I couldn't resist.
LinkedIn Social networking as well through sites such as LinkedIn are big now. At the same time you meet recruiters. Good luck!
First of all, you have to wait more than a few days to hear back from employers. It can take weeks, sometimes months before they call you back even if they're interested. I applied to a job back in September and they didn't call me back until January. By then, I had already been promoted and wanted to stay with my current company. Second, just mass-emailing your resume to as many companies as you can isn't going to get you anywhere. Companies have computer programs that will scan your resume and trash it before a human even sees it. You have to tailor your resume to fit the position you want. You have to use keywords that will get it past these computer programs. There is a poster here named dandorotik that is the bbs go-to guy for all things resume. You should get in touch with him.
