Those of you who are looking to order a Surface Pro. You can pre-order a 64GB version from microsoftstore for $899 and you will get a $100 Gift card. http://surface.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/Content/pbpage.Surface_Pro
Thanks, ZBoy. I don't know much about the pros/cons of the Surface, but I've been weighing whether it would benefit me to have a lightweight tablet to take to Rockets games.
It has gotten pretty good reviews so far. Here are some good reads/analysis on it... http://www.anandtech.com/print/6695 http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=29838 For me personally, the ability to use the pen and OneNote (part of Microsoft Office 2013 Professional) is a very tempting option.
I love mine! I have a 128GB. I've loaded it up with Visual Studio, Photoshop and Steam... Dota 2 and TF2 run perfectly on it. I can't wait to travel with it. Oh, and TypeCover > TouchCover.
So are we just going to post every SlickDeal on here? Might be helpful to link to their discussion forum for each of these since most of CF's questions are going to be answered there... Edit: Slickdeals Thread
Just an FYI, more 128GB will be available in stores by Saturday. <blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p>@<a href="https://twitter.com/evansturdivant">evansturdivant</a> We are shipping more 64gb now to BBY, Staples, MS Store and online. 128gb at BBY and MS Stores by Saturday <a href="https://twitter.com/search/%23winchat">#winchat</a></p>— Panos Panay (@panos_panay) <a href="https://twitter.com/panos_panay/status/301425229048188929">February 12, 2013</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
Just a simple question, all bias aside, Svpernaut. Is this thing worth it for the price (64 GB that is)?
zBoy's is better but Staples has the Surface in stock for $899 + you can get $75 off with a coupon code "99279". The total comes to $824 + free ship. http://www.staples.com/Surface-Windows-8-Pro-64GB/product_147834
It is if you're going to use it as a laptop replacement at home (that's my plan) and use the tablet aspect as kind of a bonus/useful upgrade/nice-to-have. That's my opinion..
For me personally? No, but for someone for business? Yes. I threw Office 2013 Professional Plus, Steam (including TF2 and Dota2), Visual Studio 2012, Photoshop, Camtasia Studio and various other 100-200mb programs which ate up space pretty quickly. But for someone that just needs a few programs and then all of the tablet stuff, sure. Remember, that they also have a microSDXC slot and 64GB microSDXC cards are only $50 bucks now, and they will eventually go up to 2TB in size. 128GB should be out by the end of the year. For you guys who pick up a 64GB (and even the 128GB) I posted a short video today on how to free of 7GB of space from the recovery partition. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/GSfezTi44_w" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> NOTE: This was recorded and edited completely on my Surface Pro =)
Waiting for the 128GB....impatiently. Staples and BB seem clueless about product availability and even what the product does. It's a productivity tool, not a leisure tool as most tablets currently on the market are. I plan on running Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop as well as AutoCAD, REVIT Arch, Rhino 4.0 and the Microsoft Office Suite on it. Looking oh so forward to One Note and what it'll do for my organization and field sketching.
It'll run fine. It runs everything I've thrown at it with absolutely zero lag or fuss. I can multi-task with about 20 browser tabs open, Photoshop, Visual Studio 2012 and various other apps running. I can also run Xbox music and games like Dota 2 and TF2 at the same time. I've even recorded some game play footage.
surface pro is not lightweight at all. It's thick and relatively heavy for a tablet. Also if you are going to use it at the game the battery life on this thing is not the greatest. So probably not a good idea to carry around if you dont have easy access to an outlet. The battery life on the Surface Pro is similar to a laptop. Rated at 4 hrs. real world use most likely in the 3hr range. If you want a light weight tablet get the ipad mini or Samsung has rumors of a $149 8 inch tablet coming out. Really depends what you want to use it for. If you are actually going to do work on it and create content that requires microsoft windows products. Not sure what you do but if you are going to use photoshop, visual basic, dreamweaver, other windows products get surface pro. if you want something to quickly record videos, take decent pics, media consumption.. light weight, better battery, easier to use, social media access twitter, facebook, games, apps, etc get a ipad or maybe an adroid from ASUS or Samsung.
Do you have one? Most of what you bring up is complete rubbish. FACT - At just over a pound it can easily be used as a tablet by anyone weighing over 75 pounds. FACT - The Surface Pro is the best Windows 8 tablet on the market. Samsung and ASUS have nothing in the same class. Lenovo is the only one with a decent Pro tablet at this point, and it is Atom-based. FACT - I get nearly five hours of battery life with normal use. FACT - Visual Basic is not a Microsoft Product, it is a programming language. I believe you mean Visual Studio. FACT - An external battery source is coming to improve the battery life (probably in the form of a keyboard). I travel, and have no issues with battery. There are plugs everywhere now if you get in a pinch. An iPad or Android tablet isn't even in the same ballpark as this device, they are extremely limited on their capabilities... so comparing the two is laughable. Being that Clutch blogs, I'd imagine he needs a device with a keyboard... and there is no tablet on the market with a better keyboard than the Type Cover. Yes, I am a fanboy but I have no problems calling out where my favorite devices fail. Could the Surface Pro do better with battery? If that trade off is a less power CPU, screw that. I want the most versatile device I can have and the Core i5 gives me that. I love my Surface RT, but like an iPad or Android tablet it fails in nearly as many ways as it succeeds. You are continually frustrated by their limitations, Surface Pro (and future Windows 8 Pro tablets) are changing that.
Ok so, question I have is this: I kind of feel like I jumped the gun on a new product when the Kindle Fire came out - granted, it was cheap, under $200, and it still works fine, but it didn't have a camera or a mic, too little memory, and a few other limitations I don't care for. And of course a year later, they came out with a much better product. So, while I am really liking what I am seeing from the Surface Pro, I am hesitant to jump on a brand new product which costs a grand, only to see a far superior product come out a year later with a lot of fixes, improvements, and probably a lower price tag as well. Question then is: what do you see as the major issues with the Pro which will probably be addressed by a 'Pro 2.0' version? And how long do you think it will be before a new model comes out?
If you are never going to play a pc game or do heavy photo/video editing, I think the Lenovo Thinkpad tablet 2 is better. Lighter, better keyboard, and twice the battery life.
This is the inherent problem with tech, has been for the past 15 years. Anything you buy in the tech world is going to have a superior product come out in a year or so. How do you think iPad 3 owners felt when Apple rushed the iPad 4 to the market? It's an interesting dilemma because we're used to paying 200 dollars for a device that we plan on having for 2 years (phones), and that's since been pushed to 500-600 with the introduction of tablets. Now we are seeing the first product come out that pushes the 1k pricepoint. Pro 2.0 will likely have a better battery, the OS will be more refined by then as well. Apps will be better, theres 40k I believe in the Windows market (dedicated apps, theres over 10 million programs written for Windows that will run on the Surface Pro). They are apparently hard at work on a type cover that doubles as a second battery, which if the first Asus Transformer is any indication, could theoretically push the charge time to 8-10 hours.
