TNT can't get enough of Rockets' big show

    David Barron
    Houston Chronicle

Even with the Big Aristotle's big phalanges on the sideline, the Rockets and Lakers produced TNT's best regular-season NBA rating in more than four years and prompted the network to pick up yet another Rockets game for national distribution.

Tuesday's game, in which the Lakers beat the Rockets in double overtime despite the absence of the injured Shaquille O'Neal, was seen in 1.954 million households nationwide on TNT, with a Nielsen household rating of 1.8. TNT's universe rating was 2.3, its highest rating since a 3.1 cable rating for a 1999 game between the Rockets and Lakers.

In Houston, the game had a 4.0 rating and 8 share on TNT and a 6.8/13 rating on KHWB (Channel 39) for a combined 10.8/21 rating. That's well below the combined 18.2/27 for the first meeting between Yao Ming and O'Neal -- but still healthy for a regular-season NBA game.

TNT liked its audience well enough to add the Rockets' March 27 game at San Antonio. That's the second time it has altered its schedule to add a Rockets game, and it's one of eight nationally televised games scheduled.

ESPN, meanwhile, will join Channel 51 in showing the Mavericks-Rockets game tonight. John Saunders, Sean Elliott and Michele Tafoya will call the action. NBA TV has the Monday game at Boston, and TNT has the Thursday game at Washington.

Yeah everytime they show us....its one of the top teams in the league. Dallas, San Antonio and even LA. I wish we could play someone like the Clippers lol

I don't think playing the clips would help us...we'd probably lose even worse to them considering our non-motivation against weaker teams. We also seem to play to our opponents' levels...in the case of the clip joint, down.

    Isn't it ironic?

Rockets is arguably the most beloved team, and at the same time probably the most bashed team.

As an out of towner that has Digital Cable which does NOT:mad: offer NBA League Pass hearing news of ANOTHER nationally televised game is music to my ears!

3 cheers for Yao Ming who seems to bring HUGE ratings to the Rockets games. I believe now 4 games have been added since the start of the season's initial TV list. Hopefully more will be added. I bet next year the Rockets have a ton of games on TV.

i dont know if I agree with that.
I acknowledge that you do have to care to want to b**** about something, but it requires more effort and caring to find the positives and say something nice.

As one of my elders said to me once...

It is harder to be nice, but it's more rewarding.

The opposite of love is not hate... but indifference. To echo carayip: we bash what we love.

No! remember the Rockets beat the Lakers. That was the first time that Yao face Shaq. That game was on TNT as well, so that's not true. Besides I think Yao plays better when his games are on national television.

The game should be on league pass because NBA TV is part of league pass, channel 720 for DTV subscribers.
