I think downtown gets a bad rap, but I see and understand what peoples fears are. I know the drifter/vagrant population well, so they don't mess with me. Try hitting the midtown area and go to Buffalo Wild Wings. There is also a Buffalo Wild Wings on Washington.
If you're still looking for food later BB's is open until 3:00 and there are 3 locations. The Oyster Po Boy and the Tex Cajun virgin are both insanely good.
I know this is way too late, but downtown has a lot of cool stuff going on not too far from toyota center. Pavillions is an easy place to start
