For a country that welcomes immigrants from all corners of the globe, why are so many Americans fearful of faraway/unknown people/places?

Not necessarily a fear of only foreign places, but a fear of anything that is unfamiliar to them, ie:

Because fear can be used as a justification for otherwise unjustifiable acts.

    Diversity also breeds uncertainty.

The media has a big role in things. Stuff like kids being snatched or houses being burgled has been etched in our minds even if the chances are less than getting severely injured in a car accident.

Community bonds has also decreased. You don't necessarily know your neighbor anymore and it's easy to imagine the worst of people...which the media fuels.

So it's a lot easier to play it safe and cautious than extending a hand out. Kinda sad, but that's life as people live in denser and denser populations.

Easier to profit off of fear
    so
every input in your life is made to incite fear, dissatisfaction
    and create problems.

In my experience, American pride is rivaled only by the Chinese.

America is no more "fearful" than anywhere else. Human nature knows no borders.

Of course in most other countries individuals don't stockpile so many guns out of that fear.

Most other countries do not have a middle class with the funds, availability, long standing freedoms and constitutional protections for the right to own fire arms.

I think it is apples to oranges.

There are lot of countries where the citizenry has the funds available as far as freedoms and protections to own arms pretty much all of the arguments for any restrictions on those are fear based. The fear Americans express is one reason why there are so few restrictions on owning arms.
