Why should the Rockets trade for a player when Morey can sign them in the offseason without having to give up assets? It seems to me that the biggest reason to make a deadline trade would be to remove the logjam, so there would be more minutes available.
Exactly!!! Also, to try and re-stock on assets like draft picks, or veterans on favorable contracts (eg cheap buyout) that can be later flipped for a draft pick like Camby/Dalembert.
I agree. Another reason would be to acquire more expiring contracts to have more cap-money available for the offseason. ......................... ......................... .........................
Yes, that is why moving Morris makes a lot of sense. Moving him for picks (i.e., more assets), even better.
That.. and lets not forget that we also have Royce White. I think moving Morris, James Anderson and Toney Douglas for anything that makes sense is the way to go. I wonder how much it would take us to snatch Ryan Anderson from the Hornets? Personally I would love to play him off the bench at the small AND the power forward, I mean do we really need a stretch power forward? Wouldn't Anderson be cheaper and more versatile in our up tempo style of play than say, Kevin Love? That way we get to keep and continue to develop our power forwards.
Do you think this is too much for Toronto. Cole Aldrich Patterick Patterson Marcus Morris and and 2nd rd pic for Ed Davis Jonas Valanciunas.
Trading young productive players on friendly contracts (which basically describes everyone on the roster) for draft picks makes no sense to me. What would a draft pick give you the young productive player on a friendly contract does not? The sole exception being perhaps to clear up the PF logjam. What does make sense to me is trading for a second star, which is a long-shot, or for a guy who will help us make the playoffs this season without unduly impacting our chances to shop this offseason. That latter guy sounds like Paul Millsap or David West, though we might not want to pay the asking price in talent. What I expect though is a very small trade, like picking up a back-up PG who can shoot 3s.
I actually think that draft picks have more value than "young, productive" players ...generally speaking. The reason being, not every GM agrees on talent or desirability of particular players. Some GMs may like Morris and think he's got major upside. Some might think that his future is an above-average role player caught between two positions in the NBA. It's the reason why Kyle Lowry was more desirable converted into a draft pick. It's why Chase Buddinger is more desirable converted into a draft pick. I'm not sure OKC does that trade if instead of the Toronto pick they get Lowry. I'm sure they'd rather have the Dallas pick than Jordan Hill. Once a pick becomes a player, you limit your options for trade, but in pick form, every GM thinks they have a chance at a home-run. There's also a question of need. One team might be overloaded at a particular position, and thus, isn't interested in the "young, productive" player might like to move because he plays the same position. there's lot's of reasons why draft picks are more appealing than "young, productive players".
Three team trade - Atlanta in: Carlos Delfino, Patrick Patterson, Derrick Williams Atlanta out: Josh Smith Minnesota in: Marcus Morris, Royce White Minnesota out: Derrick Williams Houston in: Josh Smith Houston out: Carlos Delfino, Marcus Morris, Patrick Patterson, Royce White
I like it. it will clear up our mess at Forward position with too many of them. and getting someone great in return too.
Question for Bima: Can the Rockets help facilitate the rumored Griz Raptors Rudy Gay trade by absorbing Calderon's salary? 1. Calderon can help this team 2. I'm assuming a pick comes our way for taking on his salary. Seems like an opportunity for us. What do you think?
Team is clicking right now - great chemistry. Don't chance screwing it up with a trade right now. Stay pat and look to upgrade with a free agent in the summer.
Houston out: Cole Aldrich, Toney Douglas Houston in: Jose Calderon Memphis out: Rudy Gay Memphis in: Cole Aldrich, Toney Douglas, Landry Fields Toronto out: Jose Calderon Toronto in: Rudy Gay
The trade is rumored to include Ed Davis actually, but it seems to me we should be able to take advantage and improve our team.
Because you asked "Why" I will elaborate a little. Really good team chemistry is something relatively rare but I see it with the Rockets right now. They may get crushed by the Nuggets and it will go away but I think it's here to stay. The team is playing team defense (a shocker) and everyone is contributing on offense. Tinkering with the chemistry right now by changing the roster could derail it. Most of the clutch fans are very knowledgeable (much more than me) but sometimes I think stats are given too much attention. Intangibles such as hustle, desire, setting picks and especially the very elusive "Team Chemistry" are often ignored.
I tend to agree. Hold tight until the end of the season. See which of the 4's start to blossom. Even if only one of them blows up you have a much stronger hand to play. Several are still two years away all the starters can get better with a season under their belt. No one that I can think of that is actually attainable for us in trade is going to put us in the top four in the west and we are pretty fun to watch as we are.
Didn't we say the exact same thing during out streak prior to the losing streak? We are a young and inconsistent team
