I know its tough but you got to stick with it. Getting to the gym is the hardest part. But once you get there its easy. Speaking from experience, buying a weight/dumbell/treadmill won't solve this problem. If you're too tired to stop by the gym on the way home you'll be too tired to work out once you get home as well. You'll just have weights at home you'll hardly ever use.
I recently bought a NordicTrack C900 Pro for about $900 from Sears. I set it up in the garage with a $99 TV and a Roku Box. My wife and I really like it - you can fit in a quick 3 mile run every day no matter what is going on - that is the biggest advantage - you have the opportunity to do more exercize.
Stop eating so dang much at the restaurant, man. SRSLY speaking, though. Also, drink half the beers you were drinking before, and don't eat BEFORE 6 at night. You will lose the weight FAST. Now, about toning muscle... I don't know.
I like P90X and P90X2, but if you're short on time and don't want to invest in a full set of equipment just yet, try out Insanity. For the first month, they are only 40 minute videos. It's 6 times a week, but if you stick with it and eat right, you will get results. It's pretty much impossible not to get results with the amount of calories you burn in an Insanity workout. You can even do it 4-5 times a week. Better than doing nothing at all.
As I've said, the time is really not there with everything else going on in my life. 50+ hours of work a week, 20+ hours of school per week, wife and kids at home, one on the way which will add to it in about 2 months add to the fact that I am responsible for meals at the house then it takes 30 minutes to get to the gym so it's an hour of travel back and forth at least.....I could keep going on and on. I know, others have these same problems and bigger and are able to do it but currently I just can't, I've tried it before. At this juncture, I seriously cannot make it in a year maybe but at $40 per month if the treadmill last a year then I see myself getting my money's worth. Exactly. I can go home and do whatever else is necessary around the house and easily fit in some workout time. I can wake up in the morning and just go at it. I definitely see the advantages. Thanks for the feedback. This is the one I am leaning toward getting at the moment. Live in the country. Lots of loose dogs, uneven running surfaces, etc. Plus I am still away from the house. I know, lifestyle changes.....they're coming in more ways than 1. Does Insanity not require any equipment?
At your height/weight...I would stay away from things like Insanity. Too many quick and jerky movements going from the floor to the ground and in the air. Keep it grounded until you lose more weight. I wouldn't invest in a treadmill. First, they pull you through your walking/running, which isn't normal gait. It'll change up your mechanics some and not in a good way. Second, they're not accurate. You're likely to get caught up in their readings, which gives you a false sense of what you have accomplished. Third, it's only forward walking/running. You need to also do movements in different directions to really get a complete work out. Do u have any space at home at all? Maybe a long hallway? porch? drive way? If you are creative, you can get a good cardio work out in a smaller space. Just include change of direction, intensity, and movements. You can also join spaces. If you have a hall that leads into the garage, which leads to your driveway, for example, you can use all that as one "track". As for resistance training, assuming you're not trying to lift really heavy, just buy an adjustable weight set that goes up to like 40 pounds and some resistance bands. All that is less than a hundred bucks vs a $600 treadmill + weight set. And you'll get similar results, if not better.
