Larry Bird Rights

    Please explain it to me why these rights are named after Larry Bird. What is the history behind this rule.

    From the <a href="http://www.members.home.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#16">Salary Cap FAQ</a>:

    "This exception is known as the Larry Bird exception because the Celtics were the first team allowed to exceed the cap to keep their own free agent, and the player happened to be Bird."

    That makes sense, its named after the first player to take advantage of it.
