Quickness isn't knee-related, it's muscle-related. What the knee as a whole does is provide support/cushioning between the bones, especially through non-linear movement. In other words: - deceleration (hesitations, movement direction changes, ie. recovering after fakes) - rotations (twists, turns, spins) - combination of deceleration and rotation (ie. running at a curve) imo, the best way to see when Lin's knee is really bothering him is when he stops doing curving or S-shaped drives and only drives straight (ie. relying on acceleration only), and cuts down majorly in actions that need deceleration and rotations. Or basically what you saw in a lot of the January 4 games in 5 nights, and in the beginning of the season.
I more and more believe Lin's poor shooting has much more to do with his confidence issue than anything else. As Jason Friedman pointed out, Lin's confidence increases exponentially once he sees one or two shots fall in. In that Spurs game, he was shooting 3s lights off (6-7 3s if you consider 2 of foot on the line as 3s ) and you could clearly see his confidence was at all time high in that game. If there was something fundamentally wrong with his shooting mechanics, he wouldn't have been able to knocks down that many in a single game. Last year he shot better imo mainly because most of time he was very confident (a lot to do with D'Antoni gave him utmost trust and freedom).
I agree that it's a confidence issue. The last 2 games when he's been running the offense he shot 3-7 from 3 pt range. Hopefully by playing the point his rhythm and confidence will continue to improve.
the requirements of an ACL recovery and a meniscus repair are completely different. they're different parts of the knee that do different things. you can't compare two players' recovery trajectory if they had two completely different injuries at two different times. so no, Lin's knee has been fine. It's just mental now.
Tony Parker has never been a good 3pt shooter throughout his NBA career (certainly not during his first 5yrs) except for maybe a couple of seasons. He is a career 0.313 3pt shooter. Year G GS 3PM-A 3P% FG% PPG 01-02 77 72 61-189 0.323 0.419 9.2 02-03 82 82 82-243 0.337 0.464 15.5 03-04 75 75 62-199 0.312 0.447 14.7 04-05 80 80 43-156 0.276 0.482 16.6 05-06 80 80 11-36 0.306 0.548 18.9 06-07 77 77 15-38 0.395 0.520 18.6 07-08 69 68 17-66 0.258 0.494 18.8 08-09 72 71 19-65 0.292 0.506 22.0 09-10 56 50 10-34 0.294 0.487 16.0 10-11 78 78 25-70 0.357 0.519 17.5 11-12 60 60 14-61 0.230 0.480 18.3 12-13 45 45 20-52 0.385 0.527 20.1 From the above stat, you can see that from the 3rd season onwards, he reduced his 3pt attempts & his overall shooting efficiency increases. Also note that in 06-07 where he shot 0.395 from beyond the arc, he actually attempted only 38 3pt for the entire season which is really an anomaly due to the very small sample size.
