Dwight's value is in his defense. His offense is great for a center but not enough to be dominant. He's a top 3 NBA player when healthy mostly because of his defensive impact.
JVG is right. I can't say it any better. I loved how while all that was going on Howard was bricking all of his free trows, setting weak screens, didn't box out for one rebound, and missed an easy all-oop.
"You should not have to beg an NBA player for energy, effort, and unselfishness" Did I get the quote correct, because it's a freaking grade A quote. And I'm perfectly OK with Dwight never wearing a Rocket's uniform.
Took a big ol' **** all over Dwight and pissed on Gasol. Jeff, just tell Stan to speak out so you don't have to do it for him. All kidding aside... I know most don't care for it but I love when JVG goes ranting. Speak your mind Jeff!
Howard is a max player in today's NBA standards, which to me, when comparing production and meaningful results Hakeem was seriously underpaid in his time. Howard has got the physical tools, just missing the important stuff between the ears (the mental toughness, killer instincts, work ethic, the commitment to improve, the hunger to be the best) that separates stars and all-time greats.
That was a perfect great quote by Jeff Van Gundy. He's 100% right about Howard. As talented as he is along with the physicality he possess, he should easily made a big difference in LA. But with Howard, his demeanor and attitude along with his selfishness has been a big problem this season. In Orlando, Howard didn't have such a problem because he gets all the touches he wants and basically had everything his way. But he was the one that wanted to be traded out of Orlando and now he's in LA with other stars and he's moping and whining about not getting enough touches. Yes, he had back surgery last year and its already mid January and whenever he doesn't perform well, he would use that excuse at times. I don't question his talent at all. Howard is easily the most dominant center in the NBA today. But he doesn't take the game seriously, doesn't have the drive and motives to get better and he seems to care more about fame than winning. His actions speaks loudly. Like Jeff Van Gundy said, "You should not have to beg an NBA player for energy, effort, and unselfishness"... Jeff nailed that spot on. That's why Howard will never be close to the great centers in the history of the NBA. He just doesn't have that mentality like the great ones do and a lot of the times, his priorities doesn't seem like its about winning at all.
For the Rockets, it would be great if Howard continues to underperform. For many more years Back surgery is back surgery. There might be a reason why Howard is tentative and seems not to be pushing himself. Might be protecting (even subconsciously) himself from back strain and wear and tear. Plus he has to figure out how to blend with Kobe's alpha personality. As I said earlier, I'm happy if Howard doesn't become dominant again.
Hand claps animated GIFs is great and all. But, I want to kiss JVG before I die. Is there an animated GIF for that? edit: so Howard was 0-3 on FTs while JVG was talking...haha
On some off topic ****...what the hell is going on in the back of thabeet's head?? with that little blond died looking circle?
Keep it up Dwight. Keep on whinging, nagging and keep being selfish. you're doing the whole league a favor.
