Can we trade for a 1st round pick before the deadline (Moochie -- Indiana) (or G. Rice- Detroit etc.) and give the lower one to Memphis to make good on the Francis trade?

or does Memphis has a say in the matter?

IF SO-- LET'S GET TO TRADING FOR A 1ST ROUNDER NOW! Lebron awaits!

The Rockets owe Memphis "any" 12-14 pick, so yes the Rockets could trade for another first rounder, and give it to Memphis instead.

The only thing worse than not making the playoffs is giving Lebron away to Memphis -- let's trade Moochie or Glenn NOW!

Here is the answer to my own question -- via Real GM.com -- Memphis Grizzlies
    Credits

    * 1st round pick from Houston. Can be Houston's pick or another teams' pick that is in the top-13. Houston's option. Due in '03. No protection.

(August 27, 1999: Rockets trade G Michael Dickerson, F Othella Harrington, G Brent Price, F Antoine Carr and a future first-round draft choice to Vancouver Grizzlies for rights to G Steve Francis and F Tony Massenburg. Rockets also receive F Don MacLean and a future first-round draft choice from Orlando Magic, and the Magic received F Michael Smith, G Roderick Rodes, G Lee Mayberry and F Makhtar N'Diaye from Grizzlies)

Top 13-- sounds like we need to deal Cato!

If the rockets can get a lower lottery pick they should get Luke Ridnour. This is of course they don't get lucky and land a top three pick.

    NBA Comparison: John Stockton

Strengths: A fierce competitor with great natural point guard skills. An intelligent, true point guard who gets his teammates involved before looking to score. A floor general type who leads the troops into battle and takes each loss as hard as anyone. Handles the ball effortlessly. Passes the ball superbly. Outside shot is very good. Always seems to know where to go with the ball. Has the basketball IQ and desire to handle the pro point guard position. Very quick and a quick decision maker. Has the guts to be very good.

Weaknesses: Not a super run jump athlete. Wont be among the most athletic points on the next level. However, explosiveness and athleticism aren't required to become the All-time steals and assists leader in NBA history, ask John Stockton how many times he's dunked a ball in an NBA game.

Notes: Prefers to be compared to Pete Maravich than John Stockton because that's who he emulated growing up. Definitely has some "Pistol Pete" razzle dazzle to his game.

As I understand it from DaDakota in another thread, if the Rockets convey a pick, that pick must be within 3 picks of their own. In other words if the Rocks are the WC 9th seed (a repeat of the 45 win season scenario), they pick at #13. They can then convey a #16 to fulfill the obligation.

Also, please bear in mind that you can't just swap Rice for a pick without receiving $9+m in contracts along with the pick.

Trading for a "payoff" 1st rounder would be a shrewd move, but...

    * It's a seller's market, the Rockets would probably have to "overpay" for that pick. Plus, nobody's going to be in a hurry to help out "Steve, Yao, & Friends."

    * What kind of message does that type of deal send?

'This is the best team we've ever had, we're great,...but just in case we don't make the playoffs...' Not exactly a confidence booster.

Actually, I'm starting to doubt whether the players themselves think they can get to the playoffs...

I mean, we can't beat the Cavs or the Heat, we can't beat a Shaq-less Lakers team....Maybe we'll have better luck against NBDL teams?

Houston Rockets vs. Ashville Altitude, next on ESPN...

    A-Train,

Come on we could be Asheville in single OT. That's just ridiculous.
That would be such an "EASY WIN". Thanks to all the numb nuts on this board that jinxed the Rockets. Thank you, I thank you very much.
