Damn that Tom Delay. His name fits, doesn't it, Delay. Unfortunately, he is my rep. It's kind of funny because he represents Sugarland mostly, I live in Alief. I'm pretty sure that he has never even been in Alief. I don't know who I'm going to vote for, but I'm gonna wait until I see some debates and speeches.
Considering that our revitalization didn't really start till 96, when the Baseball Stadium construction began, I don't think its been that bad. By the time they finish, we will have a completely different and definitly more tourist friendly downtown, as well as mid-town. But of course, I don't have to go to work there everyday.
I am on the Joe Roach Bandwagon. His bandwagon is a hotwheel. Let me go ahead and apologize for that post right there. I might as well do it now.
Any of these folks even hint that they would support zoning? It's way past and beyond time for Houston to have it. The residential neighborhood I grew up in was ruined because of the crap that was built everywhere. (sigh )
Houston will never have zoning. That ship has long since sailed. Besides, the zoning that has been pushed in Houston in the past wouldn't have helped your neighborhood. The same group that strongly supports zoning also strongly opposes historic preservation. They are mostly concerned with protecting suburbia from strip clubs and night clubs. Their motivations aren't to support legitimate zoning. Even if zoning were passed, it wouldn't change the landscape of the city. It's not like they would close down businesses in zoned areas. EVERYONE would get grandfathered. What the city needs is visionary city planning. There are a number of groups actually working on long-range planning for the city, but it will be a while before we see any of the effects.
I went down to city council yesterday. At the anti-war demo they asked people to go down to support a resolution to support continuing with the inspections instead of war. (The best I can do as I didn't see the actual resolution.) It has been roughly 20 years since I last went down to see a city council meeting. I must say it way very interesting to see city council operating on a variety of issues such as trying to help vendors get health permits for the Rodeo and removing the illegal bandit signs that advertise things at intersections and the medians. The anti-war resolution supposedly has 6 of the 8 votes needed to pass, but it is very doubtful that they will get the other two. I guess the council reflects more or less the split in the rest of the country. BTW does anyone know the schedule for airing the proceedings on the local access channel? I left at about 4:45 pm and it looked like the anti-war speakers would be going on for at least another hour.
City Counsel has been an impotent mess for decades now. Keep in mind that City Counsel in the 60s decided that Houston would never be big enough to need a comprehensive mass transit system.
Anything new came up in this race to Change anyone's Mind? Rocket River Still unsure who is the best candidate
I still think Sanchez is a nut and Berry is way too inexperienced. Berry has already made the gaffe of calling Sanchez out for having back taxes without checking his own. Ooops, apparently, he DID have back taxes. Glass houses, Mikey! I'm just not sure about Turner. I need to hear more about his ideas. I still worry that he may be too much like Brown - ineffective. I'm still leaning towards White, but I need to hear a lot more from him before I make a decision. Incidentally, there will be a candidates forum on Channel 8 this Tuesday night. Probably worth watching.
