I feel this is a play that Yao really needs to work on. Hey Yao, the point of a pick is to wait until the guy runs into you, when you ole him by, we call that a screen. If you want the ball after you set the "pick", make sure to actually touch the guy so that your man is forced to pick up Stevie and you have a 2 foot advantage over someone like Earl Boykins (chuckles at imagery). I dont know how the offense was back in China, but I don't think he set too many picks, probably just a lot of ISO. Hey look guys, Yao has probably always played in an ISO environment, and obviously so has Francis and Mobley, so let's stop all this garbage about how the Rockets should be running the Princeton Motion Offense or something. Stuff like this takes TIME, please stop the Franchise bashing already. Mobley bashing can be continued as I feel the man is just not cutting it, screw talent or selfishness or whatever, bottom line is he's shooting the Mendoza Line these days.
We've already covered this topic on the BBS. Rudy T said during the show that it's not really a pick a roll play; it's a decoy to get Yao the ball in the paint.
it's francis' fault for not bringing his man into yao. every time, i see the rockets runs the pick-n-roll, francis dances and dances some more before deciding to use yao's pick. then once francis' man is picked, he never gives the ball to yao.
A Pick and Roll is when a player sets a pick and rolls to the basket. A Pick and Pop is when a player sets a pick and pops out of it to recievet the ball for a jumpshot. at least thats my understanding of it. Karl Malone and Stockton were the masters of the Pick n' Pop. Malone had a nice face up jumper. Stockton was unselfish and smart and made a quick crisp pass without hesitation. Drexler and Chucky Brown, and Harrington, were really good at the pick n' roll. Brown or Harrington would set picks and Drexler had a great feel for passing the ball to those guys on the roll/slide. Yao could master both, the pick n' pop, and the pick n' roll. But in order for him to do that he needs a smart, unselfish guard as the passer and the coach to use a little more imagination.
if you watch tonight game, count how many times francis does his crossover dribble. hey Francis, the world knows you have a great crossover. you don't have to demonstrate them every freaking time down the floor. your first step is quick enough to go by most of the guys guarding you, so you don't have to crossover a million times before deciding to shoot or take it to the hole. you are not filming a commercial and you are not in a video game. don't friggin waste our time.
The curse of good dribbling! I have to agree. As much as I love the flashy plays of the NBA, a lot of it is unneccessary or actually hurts the team. Execution and good fundamental play wins not the razzle dazzle.
None of our Rockets know how to set screens or roll on picks. Have you seen Moochie step back from the pick when they run that High Screen Iso. It's ridiculous.
