If he was just a little younger, I'd say McConnaughey, but he may be passed this generation. He was the previous generation's Burt Reynolds.
If I'd never seen any of his work before his "vengeance with driving" phase or read that he was supposed to play Sonny Corleone, this would be a much easier question to answer. I think it's one of the Irish or Auzzie guys as Southern-ness was being fetishized in the same manner in the seventies.
This movie was made a whole 15 years before I was born..no wonder I have no idea (or only a faint sprinkling) of who Burt Reynolds is. Will add that movie to my assignment list sir.
It's a great flick. I think you'll be surprised at just how good an actor Burt Reynolds is. Another terrific performance, and more recent, is his performance in Boogie Nights. That film is a trip in and of itself. I've seen it at least 3 times.
Ever heard of Charlton Heston? Clark Gable? Tony Curtis? Humphrey Bogart? They were around long before most people on here were born, but that doesn't mean people don't know them. I guess you've never heard of Wilt Chamberlain or Bill Russell, either.
the excuse of being young is not a valid one. Casablanca is my favorite film and I was -40ish when it was released.
