Man I am a part of several other forums but I've never seen threads get replied and move on as fast as this board.

I say that because I hope this wasn't posted before...

I would like to know what you guys think what Yao's stats will be at the end of the year, his best year, his career averages, and what you're expectations were this year-

    My expectations: 11pts, 7rebs, 1asst, 2blks 56%FG
    End of Rookie yr: 15pts, 9rebs, 2asts, 2blks, 52%FG
    BEST NBA YEAR: 26pts, 12rebs, 4asts, 3.5blks, 57%FG
    Career Avg: 21pts, 10rebs, 2.5asts, 3blks, 55%FG

I think next season Yao could become a consistant 18pts 10reb guy

As for end of season stat:

    14.6pts, 8.9reb, 2.1 ass, 2.2 blk

This stat line already compares favourably with that of Kenyon Martin in his third season :) And also take into consideration that Yao had a slow start off the bench.

    -G'day-

I think he'll easily average more than 12 rebounds a game in his best season. He's around eight right now as a twig who had quite a few one and two rebound games.

I hate to be a pessimist, and don't actually mind being wrong, but I think Yao will finish the year right at where he is:

    13.2 pts 8 rbds 1 ast 1.8 blks

    Best year:
    15 pts 9 rbds 1 ast 1.8 blks

I only say this because it still remains to be seen how much more Yao's stamina can improve and whether the Rockets will ever run plays that allow him to score without using so much energy.

Thats all you think Yao will do? 1.8 bpg? Come on now, his best year he will easily double that.

I don't think Yao will ever average an overwhelming amount of points simply because he just loves to pass.

I expect around 20 points a game, 10+ boards, but around 5 or 6 assists a game when it's all said and done.

I can't see the future so I can't comment on other things. But Ming already averages more than 1 assist now. That's no way his best year is only 1 assist.

It's usually very difficult to predict someone's career stats based on his performance through half of his rookie year. Who would have thought that Dirk would put up the numbers that he's putting up now during his first year?

I think Yao's numbers at the end of this year would be like:

    13.5 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 1.9 apg, 1.9 bpg.

His numbers during his prime could be like this:

    23 ppg, 12 rpg, 4 apg, 3 bpg.

I found Yao's numbers when he played in the Chinese league, and they were as following:

    Season PPG RPG APG
    97-98 10.0 8.3 0.6
    98-99 20.9 12.9 0.6
    99-00 21.2 14.5 1.7
    00-01 27.1 19.4 2.2
    01-02 32.4 19.0 2.9

Someone need to save this thread so we can check back in five years. :)

Man that would be sweet if Yao made that kind of progress in the NBA. The big problem though was that he was only 17 in his first CBA season! Does a player improve as much between 17-22 as between 22-27? I hope so!

Yao scored just 10 points in the last game. How do you expect him to finish the season averaging 15 points? Let's be realistic. He will finish at best 13.5, at worst 12.5 at the end of the season. Rebound average should be around 8.

I still think there's a bit of uncertainty about what Yao will become in the future. However, I think you didn't account for the fact that Yao will definitely play more minutes next year. Remember he wasn't playing much at the start of the season and I'm sure he'll play more minutes next year (he's averaged about 28 min./game). Even if his game doesn't progress next year, he should improve his numbers next year based on the increased minutes alone.

    With that said...

    This year I'll predict:
    15 PPG, 9 RPG, 2.3 BPG, 2.5 APG
I think the pressure to get the kid more touches/shots (justified or not) is mounting on everyone from Yao himself to the Franchise...

    Next year:
    19 PPG, 12 RPG, 2.7 BPG, 3.3 APG

    BTW...
If Yao averaged about 41 minutes as opposed to the 28 minutes he's averaged this year he'd be at about 19 PPG, 12 RPG. Granted his production would probably drop due to fatigue, but if he can get some rest this summer I think he'll put in a good 35 min + next year.

I think that, with proper coaching, at some point Yao will leadue the league in rebounding, and at some point, will lead the league in blocks, and at another point, be the #1 in assists for players 6'11+.

That sounds so so good, but it's not that unrealistic. There's no player who can't get over a stamina problem. Yao will also be well-built next year, and with lots of wind sprints and swimming, his lateral quickness and vertical jump will improve slightly.

The guy has SO much room for improvement, to improve his fitness and his inside game.

My perdiction for his best year:

    24pts, 14reb, 3.2blk, 3.2asst, 54% FG's >> Championship Ring

And let's not forget, if he had anyone else who could play to pass to, he'd probably have at least twice that many assists.

I don't think stats from CBA can be used for comparison. I mean, if Wang was Yao's best competition in CBA, the rest of the league must be pathetic.

My guess is that Yao will be a 20/10 center during his NBA career. He will probably score 30+ points in one or two seasons.

Nah, Yao's passes aren't always the last pass in the cycle. When he finds guys cutting to the basket, that's when he gets the assists. It's not like in Dream's day, when everyone played man-on-man, so the double team left a shooter wide open & it was just a matter of finding the open man. Nowadays with the zone, Yao finds a man, the zone adjusts, you gotta continue passing to beat the zone before it continues to adjust, and then find the open shot.
