I am sure that Google has worked out some deal with the RIAA and music labels. Google Play has deals with the music labels to sell their product, which would not have happened if YouTube was not compensating the music labels, methinks.

i buy all of the albums that i listen to. unless you are downloading lossless, the quality just isn't good. i used to have close to 1k CD that i bought. trimmed down to a couple of hundreds. still have them all. started a mp3 collection that i purchase from amazon at 1.99 to 5.99 price range per album. now about more than 200 albums of those. the price is cheap enough that illegal downloading just isn't worth it. of course i prefer CD with much better quality, but it's harder to store those. going with the digital age from now on.

Yes. Bums me out that this is a thing. Two generations (one that I'm a part of) absolutely expect just about every possible form of content to come for free.
That's why I've released one album instead of like...4. I've also turned down a lot of offers to play in festivals in the US and Europe because I'd lose tons of money. The only people I know who are making money are selling songs for car commercials.
