This is probably because you clicked the "install" directly from the link after you submitted the form, which already has it. If your machine crashes or you have to install in a secondary place, you probably need it.
    That's what SHE said.

I put my newly created hotmail account as the work e-mail and typed in the code you provided and got this: "We are sorry, but we are unable to complete your request.

Just worked for me a minute ago. Thanks.

Don't know if and when I'll ever DL it and use it; but if/when that time comes I'm good.

MAC or Windows? I just tried it and it implied that Windows was still available, but it did not show a MAC link.

I don't want to pour water on everyone's excitement, but this code is for the Microsoft Home-Use program, which is a service provided by MSFT for corporate customers of Software Assurance. If your company subscribes to Software Assurance, you set the domain names you'll accept email addresses from and you obtain a code to give to employees. Then they register with their work-email and code.

In this case, it looks like some company's benefits administrator decided to put hotmail.com as a valid corporate email address and spread around the code. Unless this is some sort of very strange promotion by Microsoft, technically you're not supposed to be using this. In addition, the terms of the license indicate it is only to be used while you're employed by the company that provided you with the Home-Use Program code. Obviously they aren't going to come out and get everyone who uses it past that, or even really care that much about folks doing this, but this isn't really kosher.

    ^ Well said.

However, wouldn't this imply that Microsoft was negligent in allowing "hotmail.com" as a valid domain for companies OTHER THAN Microsoft?

Should I uninstall it and get my money back? They've already shipped my DVD, though. :(

    Thanks Swoly!

I would totally agree -- the fact that you can put things like hotmail, gmail, yahoo, or whatever other services on there is a definite issue and a bit of negligence on the part of MSFT. I can't believe no one on their end thought about this before. FWIW though, it never occurred to me when setting up our HUP that it would be possible (or desirable).

I don't know what the right answer is here as far as this is concerned -- MSFT certainly isn't going to hunt you down or anything, and if you didn't know about it beforehand, I don't think it'd be unethical to have gone with this deal. I can't see a way you'd get your money back either. But this is definitely a case of "looks too good to be true".

However, just having a hotmail.com account wasn't all that was required. We also needed the code: ;)

So, I am assuming that MS didn't bank on those codes getting out.

This thread reminded me that my company has a Home Use Program with MS as well, so I snagged Office Pro 13 for $10 as well. Our internal web site also has the following disclaimer: This program code is assigned to our organization for our sole use in accessing this site. You may not share this number with anyone outside our organization.
