We have selfish players thats the problem so leave Ming alone......Mings the King....My brother......:D

AS I indicated in another thread I am looking for 5 ccNetters to join my advisory board when I am appointed the Rockets coach. I am finally willing to suffer this ignomy for my dear Rox. With this thread only four more slots are open. SageHare6 is selected as the first member. Of course i will leave his slot open on IR in case he doesn't want to koin in now. Any other nominations -----

But, see. If Yao DID have big ears, and a cartoon was made of him in a silly manner by exagerating his ears (poke fun), many would call it a derogatory or racist image.

And there's no reason to make a cartoon that follows the exact mesurements of ones body. That's what make it humors/edgy. It's exagerated. The Washinton Times uses policial cartoons with exagerated heads, feet, hands all the time.

Again, following some exact science on mesurements for a cartoon is ridiculous. It seems like there this presure to make non-whites porportional, but whites you can exagerate (in cartoons).

Yep, the dreaded double-standard! What the media or press can write about whites, the same thing for writen for non-whites gets labled as derogatory or racist.

Fair? No. But, that's the "benifit" the minorities have. And some people love to "be the victim."

By the way, I do support Affirmative Action, even though I get none of the benefit.

I'm more libertarian than a republican or democrat for these same reasons.

P.S. Religion is doomed by the way. :( It's not PC.

Dead on. The picture is clearly offensive and perpetuating a racist stereotype of asian features. Not even sure what the debate is about, it's pretty obvious.

Dave, I think you are still missing the point here. The offensiveness of this type of cartoon needs to be interpreted with a historical context. As pointed out in another thread, it was the derogatory depiction of the Japanesse during WWII that had set the precedence. The buck eyes, and quite often the thick glasses have become common cartoon features of people with Oriental features. Many east Asians find it demeaning. It is no coincidence that they have been used much less frequently in recent years. The repulsiveness lies in the origin of these types of caricatures. It was used to subhumanize and demonize the Japanese back then. We should all try to learn the history of other races. Very often, it is our history. There is nothing wrong to be a little more "sensitive" sometimes.

I'll buy that. As long as we don't go to the far extremes of each end of the spectrum.

Hahaha! The Chinese triads dont giva shiet about Chinese culture and don't dunno shiet about Yao Ming. They're mostly a selfish bunch out for theyre own gains and greed. How well they impress all the hookers while singing their sappy Hong-Kong and Taiwan pop songs at some Karaoke joint somewhere all night is far more important than Yao Ming in the NBA. For them, every bottle of Hennesy XO Cognac or Johnny Walker Black Label they down is 10 times more important than Yao Ming in the All Stars. If they were to promote Yao Ming, it'll be only for their own greedy low life and culturally backward causes. Maybe they'll do something like having Yao Ming record an album the masses of mainly pop-music consumers in China (ala Kobe Bryant's rap music album)...... it may generate some quick profit for the greedies and "triads", but lowers the standards of culture........

oh! is this what some of the fuss is about?

I was observing this pic for a minute and I honestly thought it was a white guy with long limbs who's a Yao fan, and who's also an oil tycoon from Texas :p .

I think the picture is more statist than it is racist. Texas is not just some oil well and cadillac driving oil tycoons. My care does not have horns on it and I don't say yee-haw(that often). I think this is statist.

Seriously though, I'm glad you all have brought this up. I've always thought the characters they drew were funny, but I also knew that Asians don't at all resemble them. Are there any cartoons of Asians that would be okay?

The idea of drawing a character with thick glasses and buck teeth is funny and very likeable character. It doesn't matter what race the character is. Would it be okay to draw one like that and then another a different way for a cartoon to show the individuality in race? Maybe something like Fat Albert which had a style, but the characters looked very unique? I'd like to know this because I think cartoonists have a more difficult job than I first imagined.

I would take a Ming 15ft fadeaway any time instead of a driving into multiple defenders 15ft finger roll by Cat.

Even when pass the ball to Yao 15 ft away from the hoop, Yao does not need to shoot when he get the pass from 15 ft. He can move and try to find open team mate, with his passing ability, if the other guys keep moving, he will find them. With his height and good fundamental shooting skill, bury a 15 footer is not that difficult at all. Since he's so tall, he take 1 step in toward the hoop, it's going to shorten the distance by at least couple fts.

It's ridiculous to blame Yao for not being more aggressive

Do you honestly believe that Yao should be aggressive like the crazy Ron Artest. I would like to see Yao play with a level head than getting all emotional and getting himself out of the game like Rasheed Wallace. Last thing the Rox needs is take away some balance in the otherwise up and down crazy Rox performance.

Fine, let's bench Yao for a few games see if The other Rox can win without him.

The Rox obviously find the formula to win when they convincingly beat the King and Timberwolf.

If they're not going to stick to the painfully obvious formula than there's really nothing our fans can do.

After several disgusting losses to almost every last place team in NBA. I learned to not have any expectation for this team. If they win, good, if loss then it's probably suppossed to happen because the way they play.

When the whole team shoots 30% , and only 60% free throw, and the only guy shooting 50% is getting blame for not playing aggressive.

It's stupid. Obviously the whole team is a mess, especially our beloved guards.

Yao is doing the best he can, and he's been really acommodating to his teammates. He never blame any individual or complain about not getting any touch. If I pick guys for my team, Yao is the kind of guy I would pick first, Not SF, not Cat, certainly not EG. The second guy I would pick is JP.

If things not going to look up after this season, Yao should just pack his things and go to another team after 4 years. Obviously we don't have a good team in these players.

You said it. Yao is probably a better mid-range shooter
than Cat. Also, at 15-foot, Yao can shoot and pass, while
Cat will most likely jack up the shoot and Steve is a
worse decision maker at that spot. So give yao the ball.

Yao shares some blame. As much as I admire his court vision and passing, the League is catching on to his passes. He repeats some of them at times when he should just drive to the goal.

The cartoon? I don't think David meant it like that. I know some of us Asians will get offended, but that's life. Bucktooth or not, you have to admit. Yao is a pretty ugly SOB. Love the guy's game and love his character, but he ugly!
