Let's be honest, China is an easy target for the western media to produce instigative stories that garner page views and get people talking about it.

Exhibit A: 120-post thread about cat transportation in a basketball forum.

    That's true.

And I'll clarify, because looking back I now see why people were confused about my intent. People in China don't have to justify eating cats raised on a farm for that purpose any more than people in the US need to justify eating pigs raised on a farm for that purpose. The appeal to cultural norms is unnecessary to me (and provides no real justification, in any case).

However, I think people should be mindful of how the animal is treated before its eventual slaughter, in rough proportion to its intelligence. And if there's a culture out there that doesn't think treatment of animals should even register as an issue, then I'll just say I disagree with the morals of that culture and hope a different perspective evolves over time within it.

Your extrapolating a nation's culture based on the actions of someone looking to maximize profit of selling live cats to be eaten? Hello Vick, hello BP.

Also not sure what proportional intelligence has to do with anything. Unless your fine with lesser treatment of the mentally ill as well.

Again, what's the difference between those cats and the billions cows, turkeys, chickens and pigs we torture each year (if not each month))? And did you know pigs have the cognition of a 5 year old child?

When did I make any statements about China's culture? It was others who claimed this is culture based.

Are you fine with a chimp being treated the same as an ant? If not, why?

When I say "intelligent", I'm not referring to IQ. I'm referring to an animal's ability to feel pain, fear, and have an evolved mental response to how it is being treated.

A smoked apple wood 5 year old and egg breakfast burrito just doesn't sound appetizing.

You're right, I am assuming but I get the general impression people are aware that 95% of our meat is raised the same way.

Which is the reason why the U.S. enjoys a thriving export industry of horse meat.

    Pets are pets.

    Meat is meat.

The two subjects aren't really related.

It's all good as long as somebody isn't making meat out of MY pet.

Regardless you are still generalizing the treatment of animals in China based on a single incident. No doubt things are probably handled there worse than the US, but that's also because we can afford to and presumably pay more for ethically treated meat.

I don't eat chimps as I don't eat ants either. I guess if I were to though, I wouldn't dwell on it too much on how they arrive to me in the market.

As in the other thread, crabs respond to pain and fear. I'm fairly confidant chickens do too. We just choose to believe that they are "dumb" animals.
