Volunteers in China have rescued more than 1,000 cats that they found crammed in crates on the side of the road after the truck that was carrying them crashed, The Daily Mail reports. The felines were originally meant to be sold to the restaurants of Guangdong in the Hunan province, China Daily reports.

Photos show the animals being fed while still in the crates, before they were taken to the Changsha Small Animal Protection Association to be treated.

The Daily Mail reports that cats, considered a delicacy, often spend up to two months squeezed into tiny crates before they are sold by the pound or in bulk to restaurant owners. Villagers in the countryside raise the cats to make extra money. The cats are kept alive before they are selected by each diner, much as one would select a lobster in a seafood restaurant, according to the report.

How does this work? They try to look for the cutest cat then decide they want to eat it? Sick ****s. This is one of the reasons I avoid dealing with the Chinese as much as possible.

lol @ Americans with cats and dogs. They are animals. It's only weird to you because it is something not normally done in America. But let's get real, cats are animals too.

You are one ignorant individual you know that... What is considered domesticated here doesn't mean it's the same damn thing overseas.. Now, There are some folks that live overseas that are helping the cause and trying to rescue some of these animals we consider cute/domesticated but this is happening across the globe.. If you want to talk about mistreated animals in our very own backyard that's another story, because from what I can tell you I see tons of stray cats and dogs all over Houston.. Where is your cry and compassion on that issue dei??? We may not be eating these types of animals but I can sure tell you I see a lot of mistreated here in the states..

No it's weird because they aren't livestock animals or poultry/seafood and eating them is nasty as fuark. A raccoon isn't a pet, would you eat that? Probably not because its effing nasty.

Sure, and we frown on it and work to fix it. In contrast, the Chinese embrace it. It's just one facet of Chinese society I can't stomach along with their exploited workers and rather wanton disregard for human rights. Same with the Japanese eating live fish.

VanityHalfBlack, dear LORD of the cosmos, man, your signature takes up a lot of space. :(

Anyway, this is going to go in the D&D...

It's only an outcry from U.S. peeps because of the pet situation... but don't forget there are people with pigs as pets, too, yet a lot more people eat pigs and... crap, now I am craving BACON... mmmmmmmmm... arghghghghghg...! :p

We do this all the time with almsot any seafood (in Chinese restaurants, fish and lobsters and such are kept in big tanks at forefront of the restaurant, and you can choose the fish you want). I'm not very surprsied they do that with the cats to be honest.

Its not much a matter of meat as much as the historical domestication as pets.

One poster mentioned racoons. I'm sure early settlers to the US ate plenty of racoon meat and it was probably accepted since it was an abundant supply of protein readily available in the wild. In more modern times, the need to eat racoon has vanished, but there is little or no cultural attachment to racoons.

Cats and Dogs, however, have been domesticated as pets or working animals in almost every culture on earth for thousands of years. The Chinese have chosen to additionally look at these animals as a protein source despite cultural attachments as pets as well. This is the reason for the culture shock many Western people have. The ability of many Asian cultures to differentiate and disconnect the personal feeling for an animal as a pet as well as a food source.

Maybe compare it to rabbit? Rabbit is often considered a pet, but it is perfectly acceptable as cuisine as well, especially in Europe.
