I agree. But the Comets have four titles and the Aeros have won two during that time. Not that either of those teams is really huge or anything, but it's pretty neat.
ok, i'll take the bait - not to be pissy, but for fun. i'm doing this off the top of my head.... st. louis has been to 2 super bowls (winning one), one world series (plus.. 2 other central titles, right??), had half a season with gretzky and was home to the mcgwire HR chase in '98. i'd rank them ahead of h'town and quite possibly the overall leader the past 10 years. boston's won two of the last 3 superbowls (and played in another one in '96) and are about to add a WS title. and they've had some dynamic players come thru town, too. i'd rank them ahead of houston. and even though their fans are lame, atlanta has a WS title & NL pennant plus a playoff appearence every year from the braves; a super bowl appearence from the falcons and they hosted the olympics in '96; i know nothing about their NHL team; the hawks suck. and LA would have to get strong consideration if you throw anaheim into the mix. that would be 4 titles this decade. and chicago (bulls; sosa in '98) and new york (yankees; giants in '00) would have to get consideration, too, as would (quickly, before i burn my eyes out) dallas - a SB in '96; stanley cup in '99 and a host of playoff appearences for all 4 teams. houston's had two titles, a host of playoff appearences from the rocks and stros but lost a franchise.... it's been good, but not great. now 2004, otoh, has been unbelievable (still not as good as boston's, but...). and had they hosted WS games...? forgetaboutit. if the texans can make the playoffs, this will have to rank as the best sports year in the city's history since... 1980.
Plus it's, you know, CLEVELAND! Not being serious in knocking Cleveland (family members live there) but really, the place doesn't have the best reputation. What do I think when I think Cleveland? Not much really, although Jay Mohr on Jim Rome ragging about how it's river caught on fire is up there pretty high.
Well, it's been 8 years and still nothing close from either the Astros or Texans. I'm not holding my breath waiting for anything good from the cursed Houston teams.
We finally made it to the World Series in 2005 and wouldn't you know nature cursed us with more hurricane activity in Texas and Louisiana than ever. On top of that the World Series was an unmitigated disaster. The Astros got blown out in 4 straight games. And since then Colorado, Tampa Bay and Texas have made World Series appearances although the Rockies were nearly as lousy as the Astros when they made it. Yes, I would say the Astros are definitely cursed. I've been watching them come close now and then and then proceed to invariably blow it for 40 years now.
Wow, "blown out"? Game 1 - Lost 5-3 (essentially the biggest "blow out" of the 4 games) Game 2 - Lost 7-6 in bottom of 9th Game 3 - Lost 7-5 in 14 innings Game 4 - Lost 1-0
ha...maybe he meant "blown away". not that it means squat, but that was probably the most entertaining 4 game sweep there can be. every game was a nail-biter
When you're citing minor league hockey, college baseball and a defunct WNBA franchise in the 4th largest city in the country, that speaks volumes.
