With that being said, I know alot of teams are gonna be bidding for him.

One of my concerns that SA Spurs are gonna be the biggest bidder. With Robinson,Kerr, Ferry and Steve Smith gone and the salary cap loosens alot!!! They can even afford brand and Kidd with them playing for the max! Brand + Kidd + Duncan is gonna be freakin' insane!

Houston needs to stop this ASAP, I say offer Mobley + Griffin + future 1st round pick for Brand. Even that trade isn't very attractive for Sterling. HOUSTON NEEDS TO STOP SA FROM GETTING BRAND else we will never see the finals for a long long time.

Duncan + Brand in the middle would be monsterous for SA.

They won't go after Kidd though, Parker is their main PG.

They'll go after a pure shooter.

If they get a big man and can still get Kidd, then they surely will. If not Kidd, then Payton.

We can get Brand if we want. But our front office has to really want it, and REALLY work the phones on a 3-way deal.

    Anyone but Ming and Francis.

Yes they can. Kidd will settle for less than Max. Spurs have tons and tons of cap space. If they get Kidd, Parker goes in the deal, making more capspace.

kidd will never settle for less; he wants as much money as possible. this will be his last contract. besides, wanting to be the brightest STAR of the team, he's not going to be the second man. the guy has a huge ego.

Kidd doesn't have a huge ego. What are you saying?

Kidd is the best PG in the NBA, and if he ever implies it, he's absolutely right.

He will settle for less. Rings mean much more than money to Jason Kidd. If he has to play for 9 or 10M a year, he'll do it in the blink of an eye.

we're only going to have him for this season even if the trade goes through. We can afford another max player.

IMO.....Uh Oh this could get interesting...The Rox needed Brand to force their (the Clips) hand, to increase the value of the Rox *assumed* offer of Mobley + Griffin. OP in another thread said that Rudy would not pull the trigger on Gasol if it meant Mobley and Griffin. I wonder if his opinion would change if in lieu of Gasol, we're talking BRAND? You'd have to think yes. OP also said that the Rox wouldn't trade with a W/C opponent 99.99 times out of 100, thus eliminating Clips from trade partners. I would hope that the post was prior to knowledge that Brand wants no part of the ClipShow...things change.

I'd love to see Brand banging down low, but we'll need a break, as it would seem on the surface that there are other teams that could offer more than EG and Cat, from a Clips "we need them young and FULL, GUSHING with potentional" perspective. I love EG, my fav. rocket, but Brand brings the lunch pale to the office and we need that!!!!

2 guard would get ugly unless we got back Piat*. Posey for all he is, can't hit the broad side of a barn, but man, Dude can finish the break, backdoor, etc.

I say go after Brand, or I suggested going after Swift...Cato/Collier(or filler) for Swift/Knight. I'd like to see them add a post player who hedge against the development of EG. Swift hedges BOKI too, assuming we keep Griffin and can land Swift.

I want to undertand one thing. How on earth are the Clippers in contention with us for anything? We don't even get a pick if we don't make the playoffs.

If we get Brand for Mobley and Griffin, our status doubles and Clippers are nowhere to be seen.

Why wouldn't the Rockets make that trade if the Clippers would obviously get screwed?

I think the Clipps asked for something like Francis and Griff for Miller and Brand.

SANE, you may be right, because I didn't understand that portion of OP's post either. He did exclude Clips as a trade partner, but indicated that Memphis or GS would be considered.

I've been thinking, if you add Brand for EG and Mobley, you speed up the development of the team AND increase the long-term potential of the team, by taking away a person that would potentially demand the ball (EG or Cat). EG does not now, but he is nowhere near a contract extension.

I can' t imagine a reason why the Rox wouldn't do a deal with the Clips. It's like taking candy from a baby...not a fat baby, but a skinny one who doesn't really like candy.

By the way, the San Antonio Spurs have been playing very well. They won 7 consecutive games on the road...an NBA record. And these games weren't against the Cavaliers or Nuggets. They were against very good teams like the Los Angeles Lakers. And Tony Parker is very valuable to the Spurs. When he scores more than 20 points a game, they are 14-0. Why would they get Kidd? Ginoboli is pretty good. Jackson is pretty good. Rose is all right. They said he was the highest paid bench player. Doesn't Cato make more than him? I don't think they will get Elton Brand...two great power forwards? If they did, that would be awesome. Do you think they will get Michael Olowokandi?

No way, clippers will never take on Francis' super huge contract. Francis makes like 13 million per year and thats almost three times the total of Miller and Brand's rookie contracts.

Yes they can afford them, they trade for Brand and they get special bird rights and then they can get Kidd the Max.

They lose Robinson, Steve Smith, willis, Ferry and bunch of other contracts. They have a lump sum of cash to squander. Bottom line, they can sign Brand and Kidd to the max and keep them there for a while.

Like aeverybody in America (and China I guess), I would love to get Brand. I agree that Mobley and Griffin will not get the job done. However, throw in Cato and it may work.

Griffin has potential and a rookie contract.
Mobley has a cheap contract for two (?) more years.
Cato replaces Kandi about 90% for about 50% of the cost. His contract also has several years to run. I think 3.

SA's payroll is incredibly low. They are in great shape. They are contending now and yet can only get better with young players (Parker, Ginobili etc) developing and adding 1 or 2 big FAs in the summer.

But one thing, I don't think Kidd will go to SA with less than max money. They all said they want to win more than earn money. But tell me which true superstar is not getting max money?

First of all there's no way the the Spurs can sign both Kidd and Brand outright, they won't have that kind of cap space and the Clips won't allow it.

Brand is a restricted free agent, so the Clippers get the right to match any offer he gets. Because of this, Brand's agent has already said that he won't sign an offer sheet with any team, since they're convinced the Clippers would match the deal and Brand would be stuck in LA. Instead, if he can't get LA to agree to trade, then he'll take the same route as Olawakandi. He'll accept their one year qualifying offer and play one more year in LA and then become a restricted free agent. Once he accepts the qualifying offer, LA isn't allowed to trade him until he becomes an unrestricted free agent. So, unless LA does a trade, then Brand will play one more season in LA before he walks.

How about a trade? Well, assuming that Brand doesn't get traded in the next 5 days, it would have to be a sign and trade and Brand will probably command the max ($10M). Now, what would the Spurs have to offer in exchange for Brand? Other than Duncan, the only signed players that the Spurs have ar Ginobili, Bowens, Parker and Rose. There's not much there that the Clippers want other than possibly Parker, but he's making less than $1M, so the Spurs would be taking in alot more salary than they gave up. From SA's perspective, it would cost them their PG and eat up enough cap space to prevent them from signing Kidd. From the Clipper's point of view, it also makes no sense because they can get alot more for Brand from other teams.

Basically, the Spurs can maximize their cap space at around $16M this offseason. That will allow them to sign Kidd for $12M, or two younger FAs for around $8M each.

    .
Here's my calculation of the Spurs cap situation:

    Committed Salaries:
    ---------------------
    Ginobili $1.4.84M
    Bowens $3.9760M
    Parker $ 800K
    Rose $ 4.8944M
    -------------------
    Total Committed Salary: $11.26M

    Duncan
    -------
The Spurs have Bird rights on Duncan, but until they resign him, he's hitting their cap at 150% of his '02-'03 salary.
That's a cool $18M, so their best option is to first resign Duncan before they sign any free agents. That puts his cap hit at his actual '03-04 salary ~$12M.

That bumps the total team salary to $24.26M

    Draft picks:
    ------------
First round draft picks count against the salary cap at that pick's scale contract amount. Let's maximize the Spur's cap
space and say they trade away that first round pick for a 2nd rounder, so there's absolutely no cap hit.

    Kidd
    -----
Now let's say that the Spurs sign Kidd outright. That's another ~$12M against the cap.

Now the total team salary is $36.26M against the cap.

    Less than 11 salaries
    ---------------------
If a team's total number of signed players, unrenounced free agents and first round draft picks is less than 11, then they are charged the league rookie minimum for each empty roster spot under 11. In the above scenario, where the Spurs are trying to maximize cap space, they only have 6 signed players, no unrenounced free agents and no first round picks.
That means that they would be charged the rookie minimun for the 5 empty roster spots under 11. The rookie minimum for '03-04 will be $385K, so the Spurs would take an additional $1.92M cap hit.

That brings the total team salary to $38.18M.

    '03-'04 Cap
    -----------
This year's salary cap is $40M and it probably won't change much next year. But, let's be optimistic and say it goes up to $42M next year.

That would leave the Spurs with 6 signed players, about $3.82M in additional cap space, no first round pick and no exceptions (since they were initially under the cap by more than the amount of the exception). Since they wouldn't have enough money to sign a top FA, in fact they wouldn't have enough to sign a mid-leve exception type player, they'd
need to fill out the remaining 6 roster spots with players signed for near the minimum.

Personally, I don't think a team of Duncan, Kidd, Ginobili, Bowens, Parker, Rose and 6 guys playing for something around the minimum is going to challenge for the title. I also don't believe that Jason Kidd is going to give up $6M per year so the Spurs would have enough money to sign another top FA.

    aelliott,

Good analysis. But assuming the Clippers trade Brand to San Antonio now for a bunch of picks and Malik Rose, or involve a 3rd team. Regardless of the method, LA trade Brand to San Antonio before the deadline.

Now, in the offseason, San Antonio want to get Jason Kidd. Can't they re-sign Brand with bird rights (won't they have em?) and also sign n trade for Kidd and give up Parker in the deal?

Of course, there wil be a few throw ins in every deal, especially the Clippers one. So here's what I'm assuming:

Brand, Rooks, Ely, Piatowski for Steve Smith and Kevin Willis.

In a 3-way, Parker and Malik Rose out, Kidd and a bunch of role players to the Spurs.

Assuming they have around 8 or 9 players after this deal, and sign 3 players to small, minimum contracts, then what would work.

    Right?

I think Duncan will become an unrestricted Free Agent too after this season. It will be close to impossible to have Brand, Kidd, and Duncan making the max on the same team, unless those are the only players on that team.
