My wife's first car was a Saturn. We drove it all over the US. It was a great car. Plus we got in two accidents and they hold up well.

There are only two big downfalls to Saturns:

    1) They really depreciate fast in retail value after a few years.
    2) Those plastic panels save you dings, but if hit hard enough, they shatter (the panels are pretty expensive to replace.

I used to work on Saturns from time to time. One thing I noticed that might be considered a con of owning a Saturn. They fall apart pretty quick after 100-150K miles or so.

New ones are nice little cars for the money, but try to stay away from the used, high-mileage ones.

One thing to consider... the reason lots of people buy those types of cars are because the hold up well and they have good resell values. I had a civic for 10 years with 140K + miles on it. I sold it outright for $1200 and it was still running like a dream. The only problem we ever had was a cracked cap and rotor.

This is the reason why when people want to know about nice small cars that hold up well...I always recommend Hondas or Nissans. I have seen old Hondas/Nissans holdup for 200-300K miles with relatively small amounts of money spent on maintenance. Very sound and dependable cars for the most part.

Unfortunately, Hondas/Nissans are high up on the thieves favorites list these days.

I love my Saturn. I bought it for 6 grand at 22,000 miles last year and haven't had a single problem with it.

See, instead of the Saturn, I would hold out for the Mercedes, or the BMW. If you would like an SUV instead of a car, I suggest the Escalade or the Hummer. It's just a few pennies more.

I have a Saturn (my second), but I won't be buying another one. The don't hold their valule (despite their claims), and they do fall apart faster than some other cars. I'd try to spend a little more money and get a Honda or Toyota.

Saturn is a good car, The Ion has replaced the SL series and SC
The car is very safe, My mom and brother totaled their SL-1 by hydroplaning on a road going to Alabama.
The car hit a tree sideways and the back window did not shatter but just popped out, Nobody was hurt at all.

    Now she drives a 2003 Beetle:p
