I'll give you four:

In 2003, The Houston Rockets gave up a first Rounder and 2 Second Rounders to dump Glen Rice's expiring contract, while taking on an extra year of John Amaechi's Contract.

In 2009, The Houston Rockets gave up the #36 pick in the draft in order to give away the last year on Steve Francis' contract.

In 2009, The Utah Jazz gave up their rookie first rounder Eric Maynor in order to dump Matt Harpring's FULLY INSURED expiring contract on the Zombie Sonics.

In 2010, The New Orleans Hornets traded down from #12 to #21 and #26 in order to dump the last year of Morris Peterson's contract.

In all of these cases, teams added somewhere between $3-6M in team salary for the equivalent of a first rounder.

Additionally, because the Bulls used the Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception, they are HARD-CAPPED this year at $74.307M for the year. Shamsports has them currently at $73.548M for the year with only 13 players under contract including Derrick Rose. Considering that the absolute minimum another contract will cost them against their cap will be is $854k, prorated for the remainder of the year, they can maybe sign ONE minimum player for the remainder of the year if they get any more injuries, and can't take on any additional salary in a deal. God-forbid if they get a rash of flu like the Rockets; these guys can probably barely scrimmage right now with 12 "healthy" players.

I definitely think that the Bulls will dump either Radmanovic or Hamilton without requiring anything back this year.

They need to dump Hinrich if they want to avoid the tax payer's MLE and actual salary space to be able to sign a SG next year.

 

Using the Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception (as the Bulls did on Hinrich this past summer) or the Bi-Annual Exception (as the Bulls did on Marco Bellineli) in a given season places a "hard cap" on a team for THAT SEASON ONLY.

The hard cap on the Bulls will be removed in July 2013. They do not need to trade Hinrich or Bellineli in order to lift the hard cap. Of course, the Bulls may still face luxury tax issues (especially with Taj Gibson's extension kicking in), but those are separate and apart from the "hard cap" issues that are more seriously jeopardizing the Bulls this season.

For me, the intrigue is about what this means to the existing roster. Things are really coming together for this team, and because PB is an unknown quantity, I'm afraid that we might be trying to fix what ain't broke. I know I'm being short-sighted

Yes, you've reminded me of the "Rudy" Ruettiger story, the walk-on player at Notre Dame who inspired the movie. Lin, Smith, Machado, PB, yes, they are all the underdogs whose hopes and dreams are embodied by icons like Rudy and Rocky. So, I'm torn because PB could mean the end of Machado's dream.

 

As others have pointed out, I think what we're trying to fix has little to do with the current team.

Beverley most likely is (1) injury insurance in case Douglas (or Lin) goes down and (2) a potential solution at backup PG long-term, with Douglas to be a free agent after this year and potentially being needed as a trade filler at this year's trade deadline.

Also, as well as Douglas has been playing lately, Beverley might turn out to be an even better solution at backup PG this year already and playing Beverley ahead of Douglas at PG, wouldn't necessarily have a huge impact on Douglas' minutes as he very well can play the 2 and Delfino is perfectly capable of playing the 3.
Playing Beverly and Douglas together on a consistent basis most likely will result in more small ball overall though.

As for Machado, Beverley by all indications is better and more ready than Machado, who isn't part of the rotation anyway, so I don't see how cutting him could somehow have a negative impact on the team.

 

Beverly should already have been in the NBA. Would have been were it nor for Miami's crazy 2010 summer (in which they paid him two years of guaranteed money, and then....well, had other priorities.) He could find a role in the NBA as a defensive/fast break specialist, a potentially disruptive force, a better Ben Uzoh, but he's much less useful in the half court and shouldn't be relied upon for rotation minutes. Fruatrating as Douglas may be, he at least has the jump shot advantage, so he shouldn't lose his spot. Beverley is, however, better than Machado.
