When I bought an S3, I expected freedom to do what I want with my phone.... Freedom in Android is the BIGGEST LIE in Tech. Rooting devices voids most warranties and many carriers lock bootloaders (The Nexus series is the only ones that are open; but those devices lack LTE, have poor customer service, poor availability.). The SD card expandability is limited by the way Google recognizes the card. Many Apps will not easily recognize it, including many music players like Google Music (you can't even download music from Google Music to an SD Card!). Back to rooting, Android manufacturers are putting flash counters to detect a rooting and will not service those. A app called Triangle Away has to be used to reset the counter. Android fanboys just like to hate Apple. Apple does MANY things well as does Android. I will tell you this, for music, it is NOT EVEN CLOSE! Apple pimp slaps Android like $2 w****. Lock screen music controls, android without jumping thru hoops ????? Headphones with 3 button inline controls?????? Don't get me started about Lock Screen notifications. I hate the lie Android fanboys like to push. When some uses both, they see the truth about both.
Don't get me wrong...I like the S3 with Jellybean. However, iOS maybe "boring", but it does the simple things really well.
I was in the market for a nexus 7. But after testing it out at the store, it just reminded me too much of my android phone. aka no fun. Just seeing my work email icon, even though i would not put my work email on there, make me not want it. If I had an iPhone I guess it would be vice versa, but for tablets, I am probably going away from android.
I have a Blackberry Playbook. Just thought I'd share. It seems the same as all the other tablets I've played with.
Sounds more like the closed system of Apple is a better fit for you as a consumer. If you're scared to root your phone due to the "warranty" and don't have the know how to reset the phone back to stock, then that's more on you than the platform. Besides, even without doing all of that, android is still way more open than iOS. As for the OP, you'll be fine with either choice. Personally I'd go with the Nexus 7.
After waiting and looking at tablets for 1-2 years, I finally sprung for a Nexus 7 a couple of months ago. I've been impressed with it so far and use it regularly/mostly for reading Kindle books.
And power amp is a better music player than anything that is on IOS. Support for any type of music codec is better on android.
Having used both platforms I still do not see why someone would prefer ios devices. Don't act like apple fanboys don't lie also. The whole "Apple tablets are better because they have way more apps supported for tablet" is a lie. Andriod apps scale wonderfully between phone and tablet and there is no reason to create a native tablet app. Android has steam rolled ahead since 4.0. Jellybean trumps ios 6 in terms of features. To me ios is outdated. The wall of icons is outdated. Apple fanboys ALWAYS downplay widgets on the homescreens but ignore how helpful they are. Its awesome to have my agenda for the next week right on my home screen or the forecast for the next five days right on my home screen. And don't get me started on Google Now. Google Now didn't win innovation of the year by popular science for nothing. Its awesome how it "learned" my driving habits after a week and learned that I always go to school at 7am on mwf and 9 on Tuesday and thursday and displays a card and notification on what time I have to leave with the current traffic conditions. Apple has no service that competes with this.
Inaccurate post. Sounds like a hate post to me. If you're going to make things up, at least try a little harder than saying "I've heard that many are having issues". I had the Nexus 7 for about 3 months before I upgraded to the Nexus 10. It didn't give me any problems. The known issues aren't something that apply to everyone, nor are they major enough to say that you should choose another device over it. All devices have some issue, nothing is perfect. Furthermore, nothing is wrong with Google's service. It's all about preference. Neither is inferior to the other. Of course it wasn't an issue for you when the iPhone lacked LTE service either right? Poor customer service? Eh, not really. They haven't handled the Nexus 4 situation well, but other than that, they've never been known for poor customer service. Poor availability applies to the Nexus 4 only. I think they really messed up there because they should've anticipated that a lot of people were going to jump on the great price they are selling it for.
Google Now.....it's good, but it's not like WOW. Google Navigation is GREAT! I've stop taking my GPS on business travel. Yes, I've rooted my phone. Almost the first thing I did. Sort like I had my iPhone Jailbroken......please don't give me the Closed system crap. Android is just as closed. I also run an anti-virus on the S3 because of the piss-poor handling of Google Play by Google. Poor Customer service on Nexus devices? Just do a Google search...lol. The lock screen music controls don't just come up, you have have a 3rd part App. PowerAmp...really? It can't find SD cards with music on them. lol. Widgets, really? They are short cuts. They eat battery if you have too many. I use a couple.....but REALLY? That's your argument? Look...as I said before, Im happy with the S3. You Apple Haters need to get a grip. Closed system?....Android phone makers are trying to make sure the system is closed. LTE? Yeah...i had a problem with Apple not having it. However, since I buy my phones off contract, I was waiting see what the iPhone 5 had before going with an S3. I needed to add a line (disconnecting home phone) and my daughter lost her iPhone...so i gave her mines and added an S3. Back to the point, the iPad is by FAR the best Tablet. It is the FASTEST...Best Screen (the higher res. of the Nexus 10 doesn't beat it), it has the best and most Apps. The lack of NATIVE TABLET Apps for Android is ASTOUNDING. There are too many SCALED UP APPS for Android Tablets (No one is bothering to make native tablet apps because no one is buying Android tablets). The Apps alone make the iPad the best.
Please describe how the Android system is closed. You can install pretty much anything you want on it. Applications, kernals, roms. You can customize every aspect with regards to software. As for music lock screen, perhaps you have a weird rom installed, because the default player and google music both display music controls just fine in my lockscreen for my phones/tablet. Built in Samsung music player finds music on my SD card just fine on my Note 2. It's PEBCAK, not Android.
I wouldn't say by far. The Nexus 10 has its disadvantages, like smaller battery life and the app ecosystem being smaller, but everything else is on par with the newest iPad. I don't consider it to be far and away the best tablet for your value at all considering the price for the Nexus is $100 less.
man, i am leaning towards ipad mini now. i did a factory reset on my android phone yesterday. now i can't even access the market. when i press the market icon, it goes to google play user agreement directly. then when i click the icon on that, it goes to a website with google play front page. i can't even access anything. very frustrating. of course i can't update the OS unless i lock it. most likely an ipad mini for me now.
