As I've aged, (mid 20s), I'm not sure if I just enjoy talk (mainly sports) radio more or I just realized that 96.5, 95.7, and 104.1 play the same artists the OP mentioned. I grew up on Christian "rock" and was excited when 103.7 Air One radio was announced, but they too only play the same few songs. In that case, there is just not that many good Christian artists that are talented enough for teenagers to enjoy. BUT, for secular radio, there are TONS of great artists to play.
I think that they cater to the teenage/20's who like the repetitiveness of the current marketed artists, whether low quality or not. You can only get so much of Taylor Swift, Pitbull, and Nikki Minaj. If you want to get out of the monotony, try the 106.9, 96.5, or 99.1, which caters to the older crowd. I only tune to Hot 95.7 and 104.1 when my daughters (preteen and teenager) are in the car. Otherwise, I'm tuning in to Pandora or playing my Mexican music on the iPhone. I like older music. I don't know what the rock station is (107.5?) but 107.9 is El Norte KQQK.
My theory is that as radio has become less popular (competing with TV, internet, and portable music for people's entertainment attention), they've had to change their format to appeal to 1) the widest base of people and 2) the shortest attention spans since people no longer listen to the radio as their primary source of music and/or entertainment. So you end up with stations playing the same 4-5 pop songs, over and over and over.
I'm going to guess a lot of it has to do with who owns the stations, and the agenda they put forth. Payola?
Whats 91.7 like these days now that UH has taken it over? Thats all I listened to when I was in Houston. Our 91.7 up here ain't too bad - they're like KTRU-lite. You might hear a set include X, Neil Young, & Social D...but you won't hear the more extreme combinations like KTRU..ie.. Mozart and Dead Kennedys in the same set.
I know you were probably joking but do some research on Clear Channel Communications. They pretty much purchased the airwaves back in 95-96. Whats going on now isn't anything new, just worse because the music sucks lol. I came up knowing a lot of radio DJ's and the illuminati thing used to come up constantly when Clear Channel started snatching everything up.
My guess is because most people don't listen the radio all day, so when they tune in they just want to listen to the "hits." I listen to my ipod 90% of the time, and 9% talk radio.
The best music on radio is on KPFT 90.1 Saturday (Americana) and Sunday (Blues) daytimes, and on 90.9 KTSU Friday afternoons (old school soul and R&B). These are the only times I listen to FM radio in Houston. The rest of the time it's my iPod.
I forget the stat, but isn't it something like 90% of all radio stations are owned by the same 2-3 corporations? Not surprising. Also, no Illuminati here, just good old fashioned American crony capitalism aka corporatism aka economic fascism. Much like we see in telecoms, O&G, banking, and others. But speaking of radio stations that suck, how about the morning show on 94.5? The main guy's voice just pisses me off. All of their DJs suck, but this guy needs to be drawn and quartered. My morning commute is only 15-20 minutes so nowadays I just keep the radio off.
Back when KJACK was here, this was great: http://www.lostandfoundradio.com/ This is ok too: http://965tic.cbslocal.com/show/acoustic-sunrise-with-dan-obrien/
here are my my pre-programmed station genres: classic rock, "arena" rock( which is basically classic rock going into the 90's-GnR, Pearl Jam, etc), two stations of so called indie/alternative rock with some 90's throwbacks such as Sublime, Beastie Boys, etc. I got back in the day rap (mostly 90's west coast and late 80's east coast), two or three public radio stations that cover NPR to college style radio programming... I'm in my car a lot and my coworker has these stations on her app all day long at work. the problem is even when you find a station that you like, you end up hearing the same songs and the same playlists in this case as well... do you know how many times I've heard that Lumineers song (Ho, Hey!) or The Black Keys Little Black Submarine, or the new Mumford and Sons? it gets old quickly. that or you just accept it and sing along mindlessly to all the hits that have quickly been labeled sell out artists or whatever. now you're just somebody that I used to know....
I believe you mean "The Eagle", 107.5 which plays classic rock. Otherwise agreed, I listen to XM (bounce around... lately in Classic rewind).
