They can also be suspended from campus. They can lose their charter at UT. They can lose their privaledges as an organization by the University. And I think this is what should happen, especially since they have a history of this. Its not a clear case of freedom of speech when your organization is officially recognized by the school. And it says a lot about your institution, when it doesn't do anything in response to these incidents.
KA was racist when I went to UT in the late 70s and early 80s. During my sophomore year, they were out riding around on the night they serenade the sorority houses wearing confederate uniforms. They got into a car smashup and a couple of them died. Many people celebrated those deaths, and some even speculated the cars could have been tinkered with. To me both behaviors are bad, racist behavior as well as celebrating someone's death.
i'm a kappa sig, so we're definately not racist. KA's do have a rep., but it's not always substantiated.
First of all if you want to continue to defend this to the point of stupidity, the chain doesn't look to painted gold, you can find a brass lock at any hardware store, and I guess you just ignored the black paint on the guys entire body. I can't even believe you would link this picture and say to a black person, this isn't offensive. Are you that clueless?

After laughing to the point of asphyxiation, I am finally able to respond. No, no my friend, he did not look like a slave. All this time I thought slaves looked like old school rappers w/ gold chains around their necks. Wow, thanks for pointing out my mistaken belief.
i was pointing that out because pgabriel keeps saying they were making fun of slavery and i was saying they weren't and that the guy did not look like a slave.
BTW, the next time affirmative action is debated here, don't ever say one of the reason's you're against it is because it promotes racism. If you have no problem with a fraternity at a public institution being racist, don't ever make that statement about affirmative action because it is a clear lie.
i'm not defending nomar, but you do see the difference right? a fraternity is a group of private actors in a public institution. a public university is actually a public actor...whole different set of rules apply, including that pesky Equal Protection Clause!
I see the difference, I am only speaking on his claim that he doesn't want to see any racism in the world period.
A couple of tidbits for you guys: The KA VP is of middle-eastern descent and the party was attended by some blacks (including athletes).
I think this whole blacks being offended by whites, issue stems back to slavery. Had blacks not been enslaved, I guarantee you that most of their "overreaction" or whatever you may call it, wouldn't exist, had slavery not existed. That may be why it's easier for a white person, Asian person (I'm Asian) to be able to say, "Just suck it up." I know that if my race (Korean) were enslaved by whites or whatever majority race, I would be more likely to be enraged by the smallest incidences like this one. Basically, I sit on both sides of the fence with this specific issue. Whites are subject to a lot of VERBAL reverse racism, but it is much easier to turn the other cheek, when they were never enslaved and have a long running history of being victims of racism. On the other hand, slavery, which happened 100 whatever years ago, shouldn't factor into a black person's mind TODAY. Unless you come across someone wanting to enslave you. I'm sure my post isn't PC at all, which is the intent. That is my view on the topic, as an Asian.
I discussed this with you earlier... But I know a lot of people from my HS are in KA, and for the most part, they aren't racists at all. That is the one reason why I'd look away on something like this. However, KA's history is part of why it's such a big deal. I remember a few years ago when UNT's KA chapter ran off black football recruits. Stuff like that gets etched into the minds of people, when they think of KA.
