"Moral Hazard" the ol economic dilemma between patients, and insurance companies, and in this case a commodity that knew the financial benefits that would head his way.

I doubt any player would do anything different. He def. isn't the only one. Moral Hazard is being displayed across Europe as we read about this.

I don't see anything he did wrong. Back then medical technology was low. He didn't even know how bad it really was. He maybe had an idea that it was going to get bad, and it hurt. Times have changed, but money is the key. No one would turn down money like that, and say you know what my legs are in horrible shape-"I don't think you should draft me..."
Ralph Sampson played injured, and it made it worse, but he did it. Did that hurt him, yes...did it hurt other franchises as well, yup.

Good job Bowie for owning up because I'm sure he isn't the only one. Especially back then.

Well its not really his fault entirely. The Blazers was stupid because they drafted Bowie based on needs. One of the major rules in drafting a lottery pick, is never draft just to fill a position needed, always go for the best talent available, even if they already have that position filled.

didn't he miss 2 seasons in college because of his legs? warning signs were there regardless for the Blazers.

He will forever be remembered as the guy who was drafted before Michael Jordan, the worst blunder in NBA draft history.

Watch next time Portland gets the #1 pick

they will be thinkin' twice about everything ... but watch they avoid the big man

and go with the guard/forward then ..

    Big Man dominates next 10yrs

    They are just cursed!

Three times if you include drafting LaRue Martin at #1. They passed on Dr.J.

Sam Bowie had a history of leg problems when he was at college if I remember correctly. It wasnt a big secret.

Blazers should have done their homework.

Years later, Greg Olden was reincarnated as Sam Bowie.

Blazers pass on Durant for Greg.

    Oops....I did it again
I played with your heart...got lost in the game
    ....I am not that innocent.

That doesn't count. Dr. J was already playing in the ABA. He never played with the team who drafted him in the NBA; it was a completely wasted pick, which is why he didn't go #1 in the NBA draft. His first ABA team traded him to another ABA team, the Nets, who later merged with the NBA.
