Damn. Forgot one. Pirates Demons Devils Sinners Not that a pro team is likely to ever use any form of the last 3.
From a link at the deadspin "Pelicans are Awesome" piece: <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/POTUVc5wD8I" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Whoever did that logo did a great job! That being said, still an awful name. Can you imagine someone getting drafted or signing with them as a free agent and saying at the press conference, "I'm so excited to be a Pelican." Or "I was drafted here, I'm a pelican for life!". You can't help but snicker. The 2 names I think they should narrow it down to are the New Orleans Brass or the New Orleans Zydeco. Brass I think sounds better.
Or the Bulls whispering to each other in fear, "Oh S#!t its the Pelicans!" Pelicans vs. Raptors - uhhh, I think a Raptor wins? Pelicans vs. Bulls - Bull stomps Pelican Pelicans vs. Timberwolves - Timberwolf shreds Pelican Pelicans vs. Bobcats - you get the picture If you can't pick an animal that atleast sounds in the same ballpark for intimidation as the other animals in the league then just don't use it. It sounds weak. I know, I know, in Football there are the Ravens but that sounds far cooler than Pelican. Anyway, if they do it, I'm sure I will get used to it, I just would never pick it myself. I imagine when they do the team intro they will call out "And now, your, New Orleans Pelicans!" (There will be a sound bite of seagulls calling and mild ocean waves crashing. It will sound so peaceful and serene. Lol!!)
The only way this pelican look badass is if it's similar to that other bird mascot I can't recall. Had orange and mean looking face. Think it was NHL or college logo.
It's actually growing on me. It's certainly not a GOOD name, nor is it fierce or intimidating by any stretch of the imagination, but it's very unique, it could very well fall under the "It's so bad, it's good" category of things. The logo and the color scheme will go a long way towards making this seem like a success. If they fail on the logo and colors, my goodness it'll be funny
When there are teams named after weather, old boats and people who perform tricks and spells, let alone a team named after a state I cant work out why people complain about Pelicans.. I don't mind it, now that being said the NO pelicans are brown pelicans do assume the uniforms will be brown, that would be magnificent!
I actually really like the name. Though Jazz would be better, that is no longer an option. http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/8730833/why-new-orleans-change-their-name-hornets-pelicans Article in favor of name change.
