They're non-profits...they don't get to retain offerings as profit. When they pay staff, that personal income gets taxed. But a church that takes offerings to run a soup kitchen (for example) shouldn't be taxed.
who profits that doesn't already pay taxes? there aren't shareholders. of course it's a non-profit. if the pastor (or other staff) takes home money, he gets taxed on that income.
I don't subscribe to calling Christians crazy but if you contrast that to the negative publicity that atheist have had throughout the years, it's no comparison. There are tons of shows, in different languages dedicated specifically for Christianity. I find it hard to believe that the small negative publicity against Christians is enough the indoctrinate somebody especially if most of the media endorses Christianity.
Well if a family is not allowed to show those TV stations to a child then what channels will they grow up watching, after they out grow cartoons. Comedy Central, Adult Swim, etc.
Like he said the money they pay their pastor with gets taxed. What profit are they making and not paying taxes on?
I did not say anything about not showing them. I merely responded to your claim that the media can be responsible for indoctrinating folks into Atheism. The number of shows dedicated to Christianity vastly outnumbers the events you mentioned. Name me one nationally televised TV show dedicated to atheism.
Maybe. I say this as a former atheist. I can't say I'm religious, but I do believe in something or some world out there that we can't yet explain with science.
You don't have to be dedicated to atheism to promote it House Stargate Penn&Teller's BS Glee Firefly Spoiler Family Guy American Dad Big Bang Theory Then you add movies to that and we have a list.
#1 who is trolling? #2 the most selfish folks I have ever known were Christian.. and this is coming from a Christian.
#1 General statement. Thread isn't being derailed just being fully discussed. #2 My experience is quite the opposite. Someone who goes to church is not necessarily a Christian.
Are those shows dedicated solely on Atheism? I will admit that those shows will have some scripts or language that talks about non belief in religion (meaning the other side of the argument). The number of shows just for this holiday season alone that will endorse God or Christianity in some form of way trounces any list you can come up with. Its not even close. A person using a megaphone addressing a crowd of people has little to no chance of getting heard if he/she is competing with somebody who has a mic connected to stadium speakers. That is I look at this comparison
What the hell has this discussion devolved into? OP, it's pretty clear what would happen, you'd have a severe decline in recruitment numbers. The formative years are where people establish the views they typically hold for a lifetime, and it also happens to be when people are most impressionable. This is a very simple question that has a very simple answer, not sure why there's any debate over this. This concept isn't exclusive to religion, either. Anything that falls under the umbrella of an ideal would apply. (e.g. No one allowed to root for the Rockets until they turn 18? That fanbase is screwwwwwwwwwwed)
of course...who is making money? there are no shareholders. there are members, but because they're non-profits they can't pass profits through to owners/members. all they can do is pay staff....and when they do that, the staff members pay income tax at the individual level. i'm offended about HOW some of these churches spend their money...for that reason, I wouldn't choose to be associated with them.
But a quick glance over the list and a look at other programs shows that though the overall number of Religious shows is high the overall viewership of anti-religion leaning shows is much higher. Every input in a child's life matters and though there may be some very creepy "Christian" shows, of which, I oppose; most of the popular programming of today's youth is predominantly anti leaning. So if neither side should be able to share their message with children then TV in general should be forbaid. I disagree with all of that and encourage dialogue with students that watch all shows and with youth at church will discuss the television and movies they watch to help them learn to filter messages, both Good and Bad. I believe as a mature Christ follower I can see something and filter the themes and enjoy something on the basis of entertainment and not allow certain messages to corrupt my morals, such as use of drugs and alcohol and profane language.
Wow. It's child abuse to teach children about God according to Mathloom. El oh el. I can hardly contain my reaction to that. Of everyone on this site, it KILLS me that it is Mathloom that is saying there should be an extension of the powers of CPS to regulate the teaching of children by their parents. Amazing. Taking away tax exempt status from churches would do a lot of harm. Churches do a lot of charity in this country via counseling, food handouts, shelters, etc. Taking away their tax exempt status would mean a lot of those services would disappear. And for what purpose? Just because you don't like that they teach about something you don't believe in?
