Swoly, You do have a number of options. I work for UPS so I have a little insight. First off what happened is the UPS driver did what is called a driver release. Which means he deemed that he could leave the package at safe area where it should be safe from theft. This is done much more commonly during the Christmas season because the volume is so high. What you need to do is call the 800 UPS number and complain that the driver inappropriately released a package and it was stolen. Tell them that you would like to move to signature required at your address. Once an address is flagged as such it is very hard for it to get unflagged though just fyi. Hope this helps. Sorry that your package was jacked.
Oh btw your only monetary recourse is with the shipper. Call them up and say that UPS did a driver release at an unsafe location. I would assume that your package was not a shipper release package.
This happened to me with a mattress. Yes a ****ing Queen sized tempurpedic mattress. Basically I ordered it off amazon and the dam thing comes in a giant rolled up wad. On the day of delivery I called fed ex and made sure I was home so I wouldn't miss it. Well apprantly the idiot driver delivered it to the wrong apartment number and I didn't get my package. It was even signed by some random guy who knew it wasn't his. Long story short I did some detective work and found out the mailman delivered to 1701 (my unit number is 1801) and I basically approached the guy living there. I told him I knew he had signed for my mattress and that I was gonna call the cops if he didn't give it back. The guy had it unopened and gave it back. Moral of the story, fedex is absolute ****.
FedEx always requires a signature for me anyways, if no one is at the door, they drop off the delivery at the local post office...
As mentioned, check with your neighbours. Although, since you mentioned that neighrhood is lousy, dont expect it to get back even if it was mis-delivered. How did you pay for the item? You should be covered by paypal if you used them. Have you tried contacting paypal. Also, if its something as expensive as a camera, it is the seller's responsibility to insure the package. It is also their responsibility to require a signature.
