Simple question. What is your favorite place (s) in the Carribean? Specific sites? What's your favorite part? How many have you been to? Me? I've only been to Punta Cana(Hispaniola), but I'm looking forward to possibly going to another location this Spring.
Placencia, Belize or Saveneta, Aruba are the last couple February trips I have taken. Thinking about Puerto Morelos, Mexico in late February.
I'm biased when it comes to the Caribbean because I think too much of it has become overly commercialized and developed. I had a friend who went to school there so we explored many places to find the underrated ones. We visited most of the island nations except for Saint Kitts & Nevis and Aruba. -Anguilla. Very mellow and quiet compared to the tourist traps in Barbados or the St. Martin/Maarten. I enjoyed Frangipani on Meads Bay. Gorgeous location. It's close to great restaurants like Mango's or Blanchards. -Saba. Grungy and down to earth. You won't find any annoying managing directors with Bluetooth headsets teeing off here. Other islands have nightlife, fine dining, or boutiques for the wife. Not here. If you're an eco-tourist, visit Saba.
I think it can be considered "Caribbean": Isla Sorna. Went with a few friends there a couple decades ago... we were only on the shore but the guide said we shouldn't go inland... that it was not allowed for some reason.
St. Maarten. Excellent combination of beaches, food, culture and nightlife. South side is Dutch and the North side is French so you have a neat mix.
Just stay away from St. Bart's. Too expensive and the people on the nude beaches are people that shouldn't be on the nude beaches.
Well at least you didn't go to Isla Nublar. I went with my big sister 19 years ago on a wildlife safari and then I was scared for my life...a hurricane hit and knocked the power out. I hate severe weather and the threat of hurricanes is why most Carribean Islands suck.
^ This Out of all the Carribbean destinations I have been to, I liked this one the most. Have been here twice.
I'm looking into a possible trip to St. Maarten or St. Thomas. I've heard so many varying things on St. Maarten. I've heard things ranging from how great it is, it's overcommercialized, and someone even told me that it's insanely poor (which I can't seem to find any evidence to support).
St. Maarteen has too many tourists. Man that place was crowded. Too many ships there at one time. And way too many people walking around wanting t braid your hair....massage...sell you crap on the beach. So annoying Carnivals mahogany bay in roatan was fun I was there during spring break a few years ago. It was awesome. And the bars on the beach are a blast. The hot local bartenders waitresses really got involved in the partying. Beautiful beaches and snorkeling too. All with in minutes of walking ofoff the ship.
Well, I heard about Isla Nublar... and its storms... That made us go to Montego Bay after that. We were there for a couple days and my friend Winston Shakespeare met this older lady and she was HOT, man... he wined and dined her and she took him with her back to California... she was a business executive. We never heard from Winston again. I heard he got fat and married the lady, who was 20 years older than him. Her name was Stella Payne.
I prefer the French side. Lot of French influence in the culture so you get a real nice blend of Cajun/Caribbean tastes. The island itself is only like 45 miles wide, so getting around is pretty easy. It's a couple of hours from Anguilla - so we did the snorkeling tour out there, and checked out the island, then came back. Some folks also did St. Baarts, but we passed. Aside from that, the beaches in St. Martin were pretty sick - there's like 35+ in all, which is a lot for such a small island. I think Uprising got off in Philipsburg, on the Dutch side, where the cruise ships dock. It is a sheetshow over there, so not surprising that his experience was lacking. Like most Caribbean countries, it's roads are beat up and there's not much economy outside of tourism, but that's part of the experience really. If you want a more modern experience go to the Caymans - it's like being in Europe.
I know it's part of the British Virgin Islands, but has anyone been to Peter Island, otherwise known as Treasure Island? It's a private resort island and we are going in June for a wedding. You can only get there by boat from what I saw on Youtube. I'm pretty stoked, just no thrilled about the 2 planes rides, 1 boat trip and 8 1/2 hours of travel.
