Here are a few of my ideas on how the NBA could be improved dramatically: 1. Eliminate multiyear guaranteed contracts. Force players to play hard for their money. Perhaps long term contracts could be guaranteed year by year. This would prevent "Juwan Howard/ Kelvin Cato Syndrome. Teams wouldn't have to honor contracts of waived players for more than one year. This would dramatically improve the quality of play in the NBA, as players would be forced to earn their rediculously high pay every year. 2. Blowout Guarantees: Fans attending games should get partial refunds or reduced ticket prices for future games if the home team loses by 15 or more points. This would put a little more pressure on the owners to put out a quality team, effectively ending "Jerry Krause/ Donald Sterling Syndrome". There is no way fans should have to shell out 90 dollars to watch a game like the Phoenix/LA matchup, where Phoenix lost by 37 points at home. 3. Reduce ticket prices for bad teams. There is no way Wizard fans should have to strain their wallets to watch such crap on the court. If any of these ideas could be implemented, I feel that the NBA would return to the way it was during its prime in the mid 90s as far as popularity is concerned. LOL That'll get me to watch every game. The Lakers and Blazers would be the Clippers and Bulls. ------------------ Francis out top, 9 seconds on the clock, he gives a no look pass to Cuttino Mobley, 4 seconds left, Mobley passes to an open Langhi in the corner with 1 second left! Langhi at the buzzer.......YES!!! How Sweet It Is!!
I think the major problem with the NBA now is the age of the players (too many guys leaving college early or skipping college altogether). My solution is base the rookie contracts on age or education as well as position drafted. Such as if the #1 pick is locked in to get $6 mil/year (I'm not sure if that is even close or not) but be able to give more for a player who has completed 4 years of college or an even bigger bonus for actually getting a degree. So it's not a penalty for skipping college or leaving early but at least there is a carrot to stay in school. I know there are exception like Kobe & KG who have played well after skipping college but I do not believe that going to college would slow down their progress. A second opinion I have is a bonus is paid to the best teams at the end of the year, which would be divided equally among all the players, which would not count against the cap. I am all about promoting the teams rather than the players.
4chuckie - I kind of like your "stay in school" idea, but (IMHO) it wouldn't be long before the lawyers would take it to court as discriminatory based upon need. That's why it's called "hardship". I think your on the right track, though. The pool of $ distributed sounds good, too. I wonder if you could base it on how far a team goes in the playoffs (something to all 16, and more for the advancing 8, then more for the advancing 4, etc). ------------------ GATER
Like boxing. . . The Winner gets more money IN ALL THE GAMES Each team gets 1 Million in Pay role per game The Winner of the game gets 2 million Then player contracts could be formulated around getting a percentage of games. and a percentage in games they don't play for what ever reason . . . so Shaq gets 20% per game - [400K in wins. . . 200K in Losses] Kobe gets 15% and the rest of the team splits the rest of the 65% [10 players + IR folx] I think they'd bust their *sses to win then EVERY NIGHT!! #6. Stop selling naming rights for arenas to companies. This may sound like a silly little thing. However, there is such a different atmosphere invoked when you say Staples Center vs. saying The Great Western Forum. How stupid is it to have to play in the Continental Airlines Arena? Compaq Center is only a hair better. What if Madison Square Garden sold its naming rights? The only name left that I like is Conseco Fieldhouse. At least sell naming rights to companies with cool names! ------------------ RealGM Rockets Draft Obligations Summary http://www.gaffordstudios.cjb.net/
