    Rockets notes
    Just play, baby

Give center Kelvin Cato a gold medal for candor and honesty. The 6-11 four-year pro was asked to assess his first season with the Rockets.

"I didn't play that well," he said. "I played well early, and then as the games got longer and longer, I started to slack off. But this year, I don't plan on that happening."

If there is a drop-off, there's no need for Rockets fans to fire up the computers and send a lot of heated e-mail Cato's way. There's someone far more vigilant -- and close to Cato -- who'll take care of that.

Cato said his mother should be credited with the new attitude he brings to training camp.

    What advice did Mom offer?

"She told me to leave them damn referees alone," Cato said. "Those were her exact words."

I find this encouraging. At least the guy is aware of his lacking play last year, and his unecessary jawing at refs. I'm glad he's still on the team. If he plays like he did in the '99 preseason averaging 5 blocks a game... This team will be sick, sick, sick.

Yep. I also read that and liked it. Good to have players who are able to see their own mistakes. That's the first step towards improvement.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it. I think "slack off" refers to being physically and emotionally spent - as opposed to him being a "slacker".

I hope he plays with fire in his belly all year and not sporadically like last year. At least he admits it. Thats the first step to recovery.

Before every game, Rudy should make him watch the tape of that preseason triple double performance where he was foaming at the mouth.

I like his mom. She tells it like it is & if there is anyone a man will listen to, it's his mom. Maybe the Rockets should arrange for her to be at all the games to keep him focused, just in case. If he takes & remembers his mom's advice, I think we might be able to quit looking for a starting center. We have one. CATO RULES, if he really wants to.

By the way, does the reference about emails & computers indicate that he visits this site? If he does, I need to check & make sure I didn't say anything to piss him off. After all, it'd take two or three of me to equal one of him. [IMG]

Has anyone ever really doubted his ability? He can pull a 18pt/10reb/4blk performance twice a week - as long as he's in a good mood.

But let's just wait until the preseason to pass judgment...

    Again.
