Your roll guy needs to have good hands and agility/speed to get to the basket quick enough to get to the open lanes, but you also need correct and good spacing too facilitate the open lanes to roll and finish
Paul Millsap is amazing in the PnR game. That's why I want him so much. Also because he's only 27, old enough and experienced enough to be a veteran presence, but young enough to be a productive member of the team for a long time.
For the pick and roll to be really effective...both players must be efficient jump-shooters, and be efficient to finish with contact... As Malone mentioned...Stockton's midrange game was just devastating... Another advantage at starting the pick and roll game at the FT line...is that your shot selection is much more easier...your usually finishing with a really high percentage shot...(mid range shot, roll towards the rim, or a FT)...today, the players call for a high pick which i really think is very foolish...because: 1. players often get hedged...forcing them further back past the 3 point line 2. the guard is often faced with settling for a 3 point jumper 3. the "roll guy" is so far out from the basket...where a defender like battier can quickly set and establish position and draw charges... A player i can see translate really well in today's game would be (suprisingly)Glen big baby...tag this kid up with a prolific pg...and he becomes very effective...same with Bosh The pick and roll like the skyhook..has been something players just dont wanna learn..its so boring and mundane...for todays NBA...but those two moves...have created the two highest scoring players of all time...too bad...no one really wants to learn it... For the Rockets, if Harden and Lin just focus on running P&R with Patterson, and Asik...the offense is so much more simplified...but instead of calling for the pick so far away from the rim...the guard needs to be patient and limit the distance for his big...
