SF is the most tweener position in the NBA. Uh, I can't run the offense or play the post. But if you all clear out for me I can score at the expense of the true stud who is the SG. We have the "i can score" position covered with the 3 awesome guards, more than we have the frontline filled. Can we all say "injury"? We need frontline...not SF.
Oh excuse me...injuries don't happen in Dreamcasting...an fantasy bball allows you to make weekly trades... nevermind...I guess I don't fully understand all the leagues we are talking about.
We don't need a SF. And we shouldn't try to get one unless the opportunity presents itself (which it may next draft). Walt and SA will do just fine until we strengthen our frontcourt. That should be priority #1, since we're already strong on guards. First add to the frontcourt (a 5 to replace Hakeem when he leaves). Cover our hole up front. Then we can look for SFs... ------------------ "I am an idiot. Admit that you are too, and we'll talk..." (response given to me by my cognitive psych prof when I asked him about mental maps)
With Hakeem retiring and Cato being somewhat of a question mark we really need to concentrate on our front line, yes we now have Mo Taylor but will he be the answer? we have to wait and see. ------------------ Life moves pretty fast, If you don't stop and look once in a while you might miss it!! ... Ferris Bueler
cuz we'd look pretty stupid with only four players on the court ------------------ I'm not the type to eat it up but the type to hit it raw dog and seed it up.
We basically have 1 player at each position in the frontline for 2001+; Cato at center Taylor at power forward There are "ifs" about KT and Collier - but both are backups at best! If Cato flops then we're going to need to find a legit center somewhere, and even if he doesn't, we still need some depth in the big man department. For a SF I'd just like to see someone who can come in and play stellar defense and who isn't prone to making bad decisions, who doesn't demand the ball and who can hurt the opposition if they sag off him. Walt does it pretty well without playing D. Fortunately it looks like there might be a couple of guys in next years draft who can cover our SF gap - here's hoping we fill our big man gap first! ------------------
Oh that's right Summer Song, the stadium announcers must always introduce a SF...I forgot about that. They aren't allowed to say... At Center is... At PF is... At guard is ... At guard is ... At guard is ... I especially like their ingenuity in introducing Larry Bird as a PF, and Anthony Mason (w/Knicks) as a SF. Anyone else remember clever ways to fudge your lineup to get all the Dr Naismith roles announced. How about my favorite lie: And at PG: Kenny Smith Or howabout CBFC's favorite as I recall Starting at "I am not like Kareem": Ralph Sampson
heypartner, We don't need a Grant Hill or Vince Carter, but a Mario Elie in his prime would be nice. What we need at SF is a player who can play some defense and hit an open shot when needed. Someone who doesn't demand shots, but plays in the flow of the game, sorta like Shandon. We have two high scoring perimeter players, and one frontcourt player, so we really don't need a guy who will average 18 ppg, just someone to do the dirty work (defense, rebound, etc). Man, if Tracy McGrady didn't think he was the second coming of Micheal Bird Magic Jordan, he'd be a perfect example of the type of player that I'd like to see us start at SF. I realize there's no one out there like that, but like I said a Mario Elie about 5 years ago would do just fine. ------------------ I have a dream.........his name's Hakeem. DREAMer's Rocket Page
It should have been Starting at "I wish I was Kareem" Ralph Sampson I would like to take this time to apologize to the many, many die-hard Ralph Sampson fans out there ------------------ I'm not the type to eat it up but the type to hit it raw dog and seed it up.
Trust there is not that many. ------------------ "You look a team that's been to the mountaintop like the Houston Rockets, I'm going to put pressure on myself to be the best possible player that I can be. With the pieces they already have in place and myself, we can do some amazing things next season." Maurice Taylor
The argument people usually used against starting Shandon at the 3 was his size disadvantage guarding bigger 3's. What teams in the West could really take advantage of that though? I can't think of too many high quality scoring SF's in the West. ------------------
What about the BIG shooting guards in the west? Would you want to see Mobley try to stop them? I don't think he would stand much of a chance. Shandon is at the 2 because he matches up well with those BIG guards. ------------------ In order to be a success in life, you need 2 things: 1. Don't tell everything you know.
Man, with Mobley, I think it's more like how are they going to match up with him. He can abuse any of them on the offensive end worse with his quickness than they can hurt him with their size. That's if he's getting the ball. ------------------ [This message has been edited by Oatdog (edited September 28, 2000).]
Oatdog, I personally don't WANT Mobley putting up a lot of shots. I'd rather him put up 12-13 points rather than trying to score 15+ per outing. Mobley's percentage is too low for me to make him an imperative scoring threat. I'd much rather see Shandon Anderson put up numbers than Mobley. Believe me when I know that Mobley can score in bunches if he were given the ball. But Mobley is a freestyle 2 guard. IMO it is important to have a guy come off the bench and mix it up, but he doesn't seem to me to be the type of player that likes set plays that require execution. Shandon needs to be more assertive, but he is consistent and plays well with the starting unit. If we utilized him, we would get more out of him that I believe we could get out of Mobley if he were to become a focal point this season in our offense. I think that the better teams in this year's playoffs were teams that executed on offense and were pretty good defensively in the backcourt. Shandon definately covers that base better than Mobley. Let Mobley come off the bench and destroy opponents' defensive schemes with ISO plays, but don't encourage him to jack up a lot of foolish shots. Mobley does have a penchant for doing that. One on one, Mobley would probably beat the hell out of Anderson. But the NBA elite don't rely on playground shenanigans. Francis provides a lot of althetic energy and he shoots good too. With Mobley coming off the bench and accepting the role like an honor rather than sitting in the shadow of the limelight, he might get his sixth man award and an all-star berth while he's at it. ------------------ Don't anybody ever suggest again that we sign Tracy Murray to a deal.
Pass 1st, Yeah, I agree with your analysis. I really like Mobley off the bench. My point was just that I would not let a fear of Mobley being abused by bigger 2's prevent me from sliding Anderson over to the 3 for long stretches with Mobley playing the 2. ------------------
Oatdog, We sure would have a better 3 guard set than Phoenix ever did if we do that, but Phoenix hasn't been all that and a bag of chips success wise when they do that. It works for minutes, but not as good if you rely on it. I personally think we should run a 3 guard set when other teams change units and it's a good idea matchup wise. Hey, we might be able to do that more than I think, but still-you saw what happened to Phoenix the short year or even last season, although they beat San Antonio. ------------------ Don't anybody ever suggest again that we sign Tracy Murray to a deal.
