Last year we had two undervalued, under the radar point guards consistently playing like stars. I certainly believe both Lowry and Dragic were starting caliber NBA point guards before McHale arrived, but they really outperformed my expectations last season; subsequently raising their stock and drawing the eye's of several teams.

My question is: are Lowry and Dragic really as good as they appear or is there something in McHale's game plan that favors the point guard's statistics? You know, was it coincidence Lowry and Dragic both happened to come of age at the same time, in the same season, under McHale? Two veteran Point Guard teammates share breakout, career boosting seasons? Say what?

I guess I'm still looking for answers on why we traded away a cheap young stud in Lowry, let Dragic walk, and then PAID, I'm my opinion, a very unproven 2nd year Point Guard.

I understand they we're posturing for Dwight and the 1st round pick they got for Lowry was necessary... But why not just sign Dragic? Does anyone really think Lin was the better option? The money wasn't that different, right?

Perhaps it's the Bubba Kush talking, but perhaps McHale is a Point Guard mastermind. I'm sure it's the Bubba Kush, but this is how I choose to understand the offseason Point Guard blunder.

Dragic asked for too much. That's the reason.

McHale's system is not all going through the PG position. They keep sharing the ball. So either Lin or Dragic is good enough to run the point. Maybe Dragic is the better fit(cuz he can shoot better 3s) rite now but hey, Lin is even younger and he will only improve a lot in the future.

i'm not sure whether the term is rit,but the thing is the rockets are trying to sign stars/superstars so they need max cap available ie no long term contracts(> 3 yrs) if the player is not a star( rit now,i'm not talking about future)..if lin was in dragic shoes and asked for a 4th yr i'm sure morey will refuse.

Everybody says last years team were better, Scola, Lee, Martin , Delambert, Goran, Lowry.

But they didnt reach the playoffs.

    Looks like Lakers.

Great players but lost tonight to Dallas Mavericks (without Dirk and Kaman and 9 new players).

    And since preseason start 0-9...

    SMHHHH.

    I'm not surprised man...

Nash is old and being taken out the ball from his hand. He will be ineffective...
Gasol is old too but he can still perform like a All-star. But old is old. He barely cant drop 30+ pts a night now.
Howard is coming back from injury and Kobe will become injury prone.

They will be lucky to make the 4th seed.

That's funny that you would say Lin is unproven, while saying that Dragic is a young stud because Lin and Dragic played in about the same number of games as a starter last season. And if you look at the numbers, the scoring is about the same, but Lin put up better defensive numbers. And if you break down the numbers even more at the "per touch" level, Lin had way more assists than Dragic. And in 1/3rd of his games as a starter, Woodson was the coach and took away the D'antoni system where the PG ran the show. So Lin's scoring numbers are lower than what they should be because he became the 2nd or 3rd option.

As for Lowly, he looking like the real deal in Toronto even though I don't know if their system is similar to McHale's. I believe Lowly and McHale didn't mesh on a lot of things so management shipped him.

But to answer your question, I believe the Rockets initally wanted to sign Dragic, but he got a better offer from the Suns. So the only starting-caliber PG left in free agency was Lin. The Rockets made him an offer and the Knicks wouldn't match, and the rest....

I think it was the move to a more traditional offense that allowed Lowry's and Dragic's stats to flourish. Under Adelman's last year, we were still running a lot of corner offense plays and the assist numbers ended up distributed throughout the team rather than being concentrated with the point guard. McHale put the ball in the point guard's hand much more and let them make plays.

    1. Lowry didn't "break out" under McHale , he broke out under Adelman when Brooks' career got ended by Manu douchebag Ginobli

    2. Lowry got bacteria infection, Dragic takes over his starting spot and plays like an all star. Lowry comes back, still not 100% became a bench player. Lowry gets butthurt, gets pissed at McHale for not starting him basically, so we were forced to trade him

    3. Dragic left because of player option Morey wasn't willing to give ( this has been posted 1000000 times x 10000000.

Why do you always cherry pick stats to prove a point

Well "not per touch" Dragic has more assists per game than Lin as a starter, there

Yeah, I was just saying McHale doesn't run the princeton offense on our team.

But honestly though, what the Lakers were doing tonight wasn't exactly properly and effectively running the princeton offense either.

Well, how else was I going to show that Dragic is not head & shoulders above Lin and Morey did not over pay for Lin? Lin and Dragic get paid about the same and both put up similar numbers as a starter last season.

Here's an article comparing Lin and Dagic when both were getting offers:

    http://www.capitalnewyork.com/artic...ns-new-contract-bargain-goran-dragic-standard

Last season, Dragic performed at a higher level in his age-25 season than he had in his first three years in the league. His assist percentage of 32.5 was a solid one. His turnoever rate of 18.7 was quite good. And his shooting of 46 percent overall, 34 percent from three-point range, and 80 percent when he got to the line helped keep defenses honest. He started 28 games, with a total of 36 starts to his credit in his career.

Most of those numbers pale in comparison to Lin's. His assist percentage, the most important job a point guard has, blows away Dragic's, checking in at 41 percent. His turnover rate was a bit higher, at 21.4 percent, but not nearly enough to even things out. And Lin's shooting was comparable (45 percent overall, 32 percent from three, 80 percent from the line) while he took an additional three shots every 36 minutes.

Player efficiency rating captures the overall difference. League average is 15. Dragic was at 18 last year, 14.8 for his career. So the Suns are betting that last season marks a new level of play for him.

Lin, at age 23, posted a PER of 19.9 last year. For reference, that ranked eighth in the league last season among point guards, just below the prime-level seasons of Steve Nash and Deron Williams. Nash didn't reach Lin's level of play until he was 27, though. And Williams did it in his age-23 season, just like Lin.

This is how conspiracies get started.

Wait am I getting going crazy here

I'm sure Dragic shot 49% from the field and 39% from the three last season as a starter. It's definitely more efficient than Lin.

Whatever, I do agree with you, neither Dragic and Lowry are head and shoulders above Lin, they are the same tier players. But IMO Dragic and Lowry are still better players even if slightly.

I think you guys are putting too much emphasis on the "system". Adleman had Rubio, that didn't stop Rubio from having a breakout year.

I think it was pure coincidence that Dragic/Lowry flourished at the same time. They're reaching a peak at their careers, usually 5th-6th season is an NBA player's prime years.

Forget individual stats, how about the impact on the team winning? this year will tell all.
