He's wrong. They can compete, but it's not likely they can win. It's possible that the Rockets can steal a couple games between the six times they play these teams this year. After all these seasons where the Rockets had a team of over-achievers with little overall upside, It's nice to have a team where there are a lot of players that show promise, but cannot be pegged to a specific value or production level.

 

What he should have said is that they are gonna play hard and let the chips fall where they may.

 

Clearly a dark wizard cast a lower charisma spell on him.

Also, what exactly does the phrase , compete with", mean? That we're going to the Finals, playoffs, deeper playoffs, do decently in head-to-head matchups? I don't think anyone thought we were Finals bound last year, but we did very, very well against the top teams in the WC. Did we compete? Sure. Did we make the playoffs? No.

You knuckleheads don't see the bigger problem with KMart's response.

He is outright saying that the Rockets are not going to compete against the elite teams this year, and not going anywhere. This is the excuse that he needs to play me-ball, and pad his stats for free agency. You can already see it in the preseason. His heart is not in it to be a Rocket beyond this year.

It doesn't matter how long you think the odds are, who has ever heard a professional athlete say to the media that he/his team can't compete? On the eve of the start of a brand new season?

It is refreshingly honest. I'm glad he said it. I'm tired of pie in the sky false bravado. We need to all get real, including the Rox front office, etc. This team is not winning a championship this year. We are going to compete for #8 or the 12-14 pick in the lottery unless we are seriously dismantled at the trade deadline in favor if acquiring some unprotected lottery pick.

 

Morey himself has come out multiple times in interviews to say that the Rockets are not a contending team.

Guess what... The Lakers and OKC are.

So by Martin saying the Rockets cannot compete with the likes of the Lakers or OKC is essentially saying the exact same thing that the GM of the Rockets has come out and said publicly.

 

Knuckleheadedness is setting yourself up for the doom of failure by thinking you can achieve the impossible. It's not impossible to compete for a championship. It is impossible to make that happen this season.

 

I'm pretty confident most of you guys saying that we can't compete with OKC and LAL were probably saying the same thing before last season. Guess you just don't learn from your mistakes.

 

I think his heart will follow his wallet for determining where he will be beyond this year.
