Just go to Our Lady of the Lake University and travel out a few more miles and you'll be awash in overweight, worn down hookers.
If it's non riverwalk, you need to get out of San Antonio proper altogether. The NW far corner of the city is nice enough. Mainly chains that direction, but a few decent pubs as well. There's a Flying Saucer off I-10 just a little past 410. If you are staying downtown, though, you may as well just stick to the Riverwalk.

I know someone who moved there who enjoys the night life. He went from getting a number here or there to always being surrounded by exotic looking chicks. I think they have something called the Heights that's supposed to be fun. Anyways, not all is lost.
Check out Sam's Burger Joint and Music Hall. 330 E. Grayson - (210)223-2830 www.samsburgerjoint.com Great live music, kickass burgers and wings, and stiff drinks. I had a fine time there last time I was in San Antonio.
Bombays Bicycle Club is a great place to go on a Friday, but it's often overrun w/ Trinity University kids. Anywhere on Broadway is also good - 50/50, Rebar, the Hangar. Those are all basically in the Heights (Alamo Heights) that Ziggy had mentioned. Have fun! If you want a great burger, go to Charlie's @ Broadway & St. Mary's and get their super burger. It's glorious.
There's the Alamo Quarry. It's not exciting, but it's got some chain restaurants and a theater. You'll be surrounded by high schoolers, so that's fun. And there's also a good taco place somewhere around that loop in SA: Guajillo's. Get the tacos al pastor.
I spent a few (drunk) nights in San Antonio many years ago. We ended up in some trashy lounge with an old piano player and his wife on drums doing a Vegas-style lounge act. They played nothing but requests written on napkins all night long. Any idea what place this might have been?
What he said but also Southtown has some cool places. Also if we are talking about burgers in San Antonio, you have to mention Chris Madrids. Stone Oak also has some nice bars but it is very "suburban".
Nope, I've been there a million times and I know for sure it wasn't on the Riverwalk. Might have been north of downtown.
There are many places to go to...The Rim is on the northwest side and there are some upscale restaurants which have really good drinks and really hot MILF's to looks at. A place called StoneWerks. There is also La Cantera Mall at night where there is Yard House or Kona Grill (Saki Bombs). <--- More upscalish type restaurants to chill and have a good time. There are your college bars Club Espana on Hausman Rd. or The Cantina on UTSA Blvd. Or there are upscale bars where you might see the likes of Tony Parker and other Spurs players. There is a nice place called Ivy Rooftop Bar as well as Area 31 (owned by Priest Holmes). Its an open bar with tons of hot, rich, middle aged women. This is on i-10 on the Northwest side again close to UTSA. Finally there is the Stone Oak area which is north central San Antonio which are ok bars but sometimes kinda sketchy. I went to UTSA so I am pretty familiar with the party/bar/club scene.
There is also Pat O'Bryans in Downtown. 2 Hurricanes and your in for a great night. Just dont drink and drive.
For really good beers, Freetail Brewery on 1604 @ NW Military. Good food, too. I went to UTSA for a year in the early 90's. There was NOTHING on that side of town. There were a couple of cheesy places on Fredricksburg Rd., but that was it. It's amazing how much that area has changed.
