Omer does have a great mind. You can see him thinking and visualizing things out there. Just like that offensive foul that he got off the catch and spin in the paint in the third quarter....that was a good move. They got the ball to him a tad late and he stepped into an offensive foul. But you could see that he was seeing things out there. You can see that and you can see him seeing his teammates and giving up the basketball. Offensively, his skillset does not match his bball iq nor his floor vision right now. If he can develop his skillset, he could really turn into something.

But defensively he's going to dominate almost every night.

Here's what's going to happen though. When we run into the good teams, like the Lakers and Thunder, etc., they are going to take it straight to Omer to begin the games with their bigs...trying to squeeze fouls out of him so he has to go to the bench. On this team, Omer is going to be the head of the snake defensively. He allows everybody else to body up, contest every dribble, and cheat in the passing lanes. They know Omer is back there. So from a defensive point of view, the quickest way to kill this team is going to be to get Omer in foul trouble and him sit the bench. The top-notch teams know that or will know that after scouting us for a few games. So, they're going to gameplan to get him in foul trouble. And he'll get in foul trouble enough to warrant them continuing to do it.

They'll go after him early defensively to get him out of the game....and then if that doesn't work...they'll rest their first string bigs after 5 minutes or so and run their scrub bigs in there to hack him and send him to the free throw line for the rest of his floor time, thereby negating his +/- effectiveness by making his possessions a drain on offensive efficiency.

Omer has to learn to shoot the freebies at 70% and he has to understand the importance of staying out of foul trouble early in the game. He's going to have to discipline himself to tone down the defensive aggression early and ratchet it up later in the game so he can maintain his floor presence and rhythm.

We'll go as far as Omer and Lin take us. If Omer overcomes these hurdles in his game, the poor free throw shooting, and if he is wise enough to back off defensively early so as to not get into foul trouble, then he's going to be a top 10 center easily and this team will wind up over .500 for the season.

Mayne, at first I was like man this ***ga Osik is gone? As in passed. Then I realized it was a passing thread.

The OP should have put it bluntly, "Why no videos of Omer passing?".

    Am I right?

Yeah, I can see that. I've already seen it somewhere this summer. Btw, most advanced stats last year supported Asik's case, defensively. Eyeball test, it's very close. If Asik proves he can play 30 min every night, I might even take him. Offensively there's a gap, though.

This is a thread about the passing of Ömer and is titled as such. This being a basketball forum, the word "passing" clearly has it's basketball meaning.

What would you prefer the title to be? "Ömer's Passing"?

I agree. I'd add that I've been really impressed with his ability to run the floor. He does that surprisingly well for a 300 pounder. I'm loving this signing.

I used to wish the Rockets could acquire Kendrick Perkins but Omer is looking like he may be better.

    Omer Passes Away

And then the post content could be all about how Omer is so good at passes the ball away to other teammates so well.

saw some very nice catches for a big man during preseason. he just needs to play with more confidence on the offensive side. think it's all physiological. like when you play with a superstar as a rookie, and you mess up just once, they put you down. like Kobe does, and maybe Rose's reaction wasn't so encouraging either? but on this team, Asik will regain his confidence with Lin and the rest of the guys here. no issues with his catching. pretty sure it's just in the head, no real skills involved in catching.

If Omer stays healthy, stays out of foul trouble, and ups his FT shooting percentage to the 70's, and JLin stays healthy, then the OP is right...this will be an over .500 team fighting for the playoffs.

But if either guy suffers a serious injury or Asik can't stay out of foul trouble and get his FT shooting percentage up, then this could be a 4-8 pick lottery team.

Haha. This will be the reverse of how Francis / Alston / Brooks took blame for Yao not being able to handle their passes.

Nothing against Yao or any of them - just funny how fans react.

I think Omer Asik is a Top 5 center NOW:

    Dwight Howard
    Andrew Bynum
    Al Jefferson
    Marcin Gortat
    Omer Asik
