Yeah, to be quite honest, this a bit of a pain for the team. Fact is, the Rox don't need White, they have like 500 other tweeners on the team. As White himself said, the Rox didn't have to take a chance on him, but they did. And how does he repay them? Holding out of training camp and requesting high maintenance treatment AFTER saying during the interview that flights would be no problem There is definitely bad form from White, and honestly wtf would you even contemplate being in the NBA if you can't handle flights? This is like a pilot applying for the air force then telling the commander he's afraid of heights right before takeoff. To those saying its not a big deal...White's not exactly a core part of the rotation. WTF should the team be making special accom for someone who hasn't even proved he belongs in the NBA? I hope White understands the stress he's causing the team and pays for it with great performances going forward.
He is in treatment. It may eventually help it may not. Don't blame him for an illness especially one that is so crippling and one that is still in relatively uncharted territory in the medical field.
This guy will get buried on the bench for missing practice time and yes im talking about practice.Cant wait for the first 4 games in 5 night road trip for this guys head to explode
If the teams can put up with all the posse's, entitlement, and primadona crap, I really think helping this guy adjust is not too much to ask. Seriously. And if he can't cut it after that then superglue his A$$ to the bottom of the next puddle jumper going to Mobile by way of Lake Charles, Lafayette, Baton Rouge, Biloxi, and Pascagoula.
It might help team chemistry if some of the other players were able to ride with him in his bus. I'm sure that there will be room.
Does my having the opinion bother you or that I put it out plainly early in the thread? I'll say it again: My first read is Morey blew the pick and it's very doubtful White has a successful career with the Rockets.
But Royce doesn't have cancer. It's an insult to compare the situations. I think he was just asking an honest question. Most people don't know about this disorder.
If they are not voiding his contract, what would he sue about? You can't sue a team for trading you. You also can't sue a team for waiving you as long as they pay all remaining guaranteed money. I suppose he can sue to force the team-- and the NBA-- to allow him to travel by bus. Doubt it goes down that way, though. Seem that it's mostly an issue of working out the logistics and legal issues than the team and the NBA taking a hard stand.
yeah i was thinking about starting a poll, if he's granted permission. I could see it happening on such a young team.
it's easy for us, looking inside from the out, to ask this question. people with anxiety are wired differently. they can't just flip it on/off like a switch. i feel bad for both parties. they should just ba him like on the a-team for every flight.
I agree. White has an illness and that should be accommodated in a reasonable manner with sympathy and understanding. Having said that 1. Why is this coming up now when he's been a rocket for months? 2. The games haven't started. Why not drive to McAllen for training camp while negotiating the details - the games don't start for 2 weeks. There's no reason to miss a nearby and critical training camp to get a bus pass. You can skip the actual games if it's not resolved by then. 3. Why the espn interview? This should be a rockets announcement. This smacks of a mcgrady type move.
If you don't know about the situation then read about it before you post. I loved RW's grantland video so I decided to read up on anxiety and talk to guys on twitter about it because I wanted to be informed. This is a sensitive situation and there is a lot of insensitivity on this thread.
um... maybe bc the rockets have flat out said they were completely blindsided by him not being at camp? he was fully capable of making it to summer league, right? but now he can't make it McAllen, TX? this is a holdout, plain and simple. the rockets obviously knew of his condition but he clearly gave ZERO warning that he would pull a move like this; otherwise, this wouldn't be an issue to begin with.
Players don't RSVP to camp. They are told when and where to be. Royce did not call and say "I'm not going to be there". They did roll call on day 1 and he didn't answer the bell. That is pretty much as blindside as you can get. Maybe if the training camp required a flight to be there, then you could argue they should've seen it coming... but this is friggin' McAllen Texas. I, nor anyone else, should have expected Royce to use a training camp holdout as part of his negotiation of a bus-friendly travel agreement.
Go watch the ESPN video. White himself said that he and his agent decided to work out "a plan" a couple of days before training camp.
I myself have had the exact same issues that Royce White has had for years. I hate flying. It makes me so nervous. I had to turn down a new jon recently because it would have involved more traveling then I am confortable with. I have to take Valium or Xanax sometimes just to get on the plane. I feel for him. But to do this now right before training camp? It stinks. Very unprofessional. They should have had this done long time ago. Makes me mad. If I were Royce White, I would have sat down months ago with the Rockets to take care of this. He's a rookie. He needs to be at camp. Just wait, He'll start complaining about playing time next when he didn't arrive at camp from day one.
