It's a slow day in the office today, so... Has anyone ever thought out scenarios that could lead to WW3 and how it may play out? What event(s) could lead to it? Who would be allies? What theater(s) would the major fighting be located? Protagonist/Antagonist? Who would win? etc... Any thoughts? Placed in the D&D in hopes for intelligent discussion.

World War III Sides being drawn into the Isreal vs The Middle East I once thought China flexing their muscles was a bigger threat, but I think they are smart enough to realize that their best changes of "world domination" is economic not through force.
From out of the sky, Soviet, Nicaraguan, and Cuban troops begin landing on the football field of a Colorado high school. In seconds, the paratroopers have attacked the school and sent a group of teenagers fleeing into the mountains. Armed only with hunting rifles, pistols, and bows and arrows, the teens struggle to survive the bitter winter and the Soviet KGB patrols hunting for them. Eventually, trouble arises when they kill a group of Soviet soldiers on patrol in the highlands. Soon they will wage their own guerrilla warfare against the invading Soviet troops-under the banner of 'Wolverines!'
We are constantly on the brink of nuclear war. It's so depressing. I think the most likely trigger could be China-Japan issues. WWIII would have to involve a blow up between China and Taiwan. We would roll Iran and any of their allies just about as fast as Iraq. If NK attacked SK the north wouldn't get support from China if they were the aggressor and I don't see any scenario where SK attacks the north.

Russia and China team up and take over the world. They are very friendly with each other. Not many people realize that.
A glitch in the war operations plan response systems will occur that causes it to launch a full scale nuclear attack based on a teen hacker's misguided attempts to obtain illegally downloaded software. Spoiler
I don't think will ever have a world war 3- because I don't think we will ever see war break out on in so many different places like the other wars did. But I'll play along. China and Japan go to war, Taiwan declares independence. At the same time, Israel strikes Iran, dragging NATO in as well as the Arab States. A proxy war between the US and Russia breaks out in Syria. The US attempts to stop Africa from supplying China- breaking out into a war between parties of all interests. Basically, there are four fronts: 1) Gulf(Iran, backed by Lebanon and supported by Russia against Israel and limited NATO and Pan Arab forces that devastate- but not take over- Iran). 2) Syria (Russia supports Assad with limited support, but Assad stays in power anyway). 3) Asia (Taiwainese revolt is crushed, Japan and China both have tremendous casualties, and the islands are given to China). 4) Africa (a complete cluster****. Chinese puppets, NATO airstrikes, US backed forces all fight each other while Islamists and other insurgents attempt to remove all three. In the end, Africa becomes an even more violent and messy continent) Total Results: -Iran loses it's nuclear program, Lebanon loses some territory near Israel. - Iran is now weaker, but more united, determined and resilient than ever. - The global economy crashes to levels beyond we've ever seen. Remember how big China, Japan, and our economies are. -The US loses it's hegemony and economic dominance after much public backlash and crippling debt and the "American Era" comes to an end. - Nearly every African country plunges into civil war (as foreign countries can no longer provide aid or fund puppet states). The conflict is long, bloody, and goes on for generations as ethnic, religious, and tribal histories all factor in.
If there is ww3 America is whooping everyone's ass. The amount of money that has gone into the military must have yielded some crazy ass weapons. Or there it a nuclear war and we all die except for those of us becoming zombies.

I don't see it happening without Russia and Western Europe invading each other, which would probably seem ridiculous if not for how silly World War I was. I think we could have politically gone back to 1930s neutrality had something like 9/11: with the size and scale of domestic damage and obvious ties to a sovereign government, not happened. The Kosovo engagement was about as close as we'll probably get to having a large chunk of anti-war Republicans; I remember hearing a pretty dreadful "Streets of Yugoslavia" Springsteen cover on Mike Reagan. If anything that reminds me of just how awesome and full of missed opportunities the late '90s was. As much as the Middle Eastern countries might hate us, it seems like they all despise each other and will never reach their full industrial and economic potential to the point that they'd be a real threat. I guess if North Korea ever re-invaded the south then China would have some interesting decisions to make.
Japan is the only one that has the intention and capability to start the war. They now are behaving very much like German after WWI in need of resource, land and revenge. They will drag USA into a war against China once the economy drops to certain low level. But Russia will end up getting the most land of China.
