Cursory glance at the Southwest Division using "advanced stats." The article predicts that "the Southwest should still be one of the toughest divisions in the league" which I don't agree with. The Rockets portion is stuff we've all heard; only new thing was the stats on Delfino. http://www.nba.com/2012/news/features/john_schuhmann/09/24/southwest-division-advanced-stats/
Delfino won't play. He was picked up to fill the hispanic void from when Scola left (thats why the Rockets were also considering Eduardo Najera). The Rox also need an older player and a 3rd string sg. Morris will take back up 3 and Lamb will take back up 2.
I am not convinced that Mavs will be better this season than last. They lost Terry, their best scorer off the bench. Yes adding Brand will help scoring but isnt he a PF? Or is Cuban planning on putting him at 5? And, will Anderson + Davis really bring Hornets over .500 this season? They were 21-45 last season. Most of the teams weren't prepared and they had a terrible season. The top two power will remain Memphis and Spur, IMHO. Both team are well coached and have solid rotations. I can't see anyone else beat these two in playoff from SW division. Rockets IMO in this season is a huge experiment. Sending away almost veteran players to rebuild the roster. And yet we acquired some talents that seemed to be "good" so far. Will we have winning record? I think Rockets will have winning record because there are a lot of crappy teams in this league. You dont need a super start talent to win regular games. Unfortunately, that's not what many Rockets fan wanna see. Rockets want to acquire top talent from the draft next year. Maybe any mid season trade will take place with Martin and some young talents to get high draft seed. Amidst the indecisions, I think Rockets will again finish around .500 with some good runs and bad ones because IMO nobody knows how Rockets is going to play. Yes we know Jeremy Lin will P&R. What about the rest of the team? How is McHale going to play DMo and White? Or Lamb + Martin? There are many new things McHale has to figure out before season starts. Once he does, it's up to the rest of the league to figure out how to play Rockets. At the end of the day, Rockets have nothing to lose this season, but a million reasons to win, or even to lose.
You gotta remember the Mavs also snagged Chris Kamen and Darren Collison. I think they are going to be pretty solid this year. Also, Hornets have Eric Gordon who - when healthy - can be a VERY good player (and no doubt is the best player on the Hornets). Our division once again will be a powerhouse and our beloved Rockets are going to have some serious growing pains because of this. Im not saying that this is a bad thing though. I actually like giving rookies a taste of real NBA competition in a Sink or Swim environment versus a coddled bottom level playoff exit bound one. My moneys on the Rockets going 36-46 on the season.
Also the Mavs got OJ Mayo who I think should be an early candidate for Most Improved Player. This is the perfect time for the Rockets to do what they are doing this year. There are alot of teams that are trying to make that one last run, or making a run with the talent they have for a couple more seasons. The Rockets just cant compete with that right now with borderline all-star talent. Its time to re-tool now before teams like the Spurs/LAL/DAL blow up their teams to start the rebuilding process. So that way when they are blowing up their roster, the Rockets are the next up and coming team in the West here in a few years if all goes to plan. So articles coming out like this shouldn't really surprise anyone. The Rockets are designed to be this way on purpose given the long term needs and the environmental factors going on in their league. Young, rebuilding team that is very fun to watch and plays hard every night. Their moniker will be..."They will be a team to watch out for in 2 to 3 years." However, this year they are built to lose games.
Didn't Dallas get Darren Collison, OJ Mayo, Kaman AND win the bid to get Elton Brand? I wouldn't be surprised if those 4 players with Carter, Marion, and Dirk all blend in together and somehow push past the Grizzlies and compete with the Spurs for a top seed.
So this confirms what we suspected all along. Delfino is a guy who will help us tank. In fact he will probably be our scapegoat in order TO tank. In loose terms...he is our tankadin.
That's awesome. What team has a piece like that in their disposal? Whenever you want to win, you sit the guy on the bench. Whenever you want to tank, you put him on the floor. I knew Morey must be up to something when he acquired Delfino. What a genius!
Since i followed th rockets, i kept hearing that Morey is a genious GM. Never thought this is how GREAT genious he is. Amazing! Gotta love the Rockets.
Because of the 'Mexican market comment? This fellow seems to make the same point: http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showpost.php?p=7108460&postcount=30
Yes, because of the Mexican market. Scola was our only Mexican last year, so we had to replace him with another Mexican in Delfino.
You completely ignored the fact that OJ Mayo is on the team. I think he makes the Mavs better regardless of how his season turns out.
Houston can easily be 3rd in the SW if they can play the season right. If Asik is the defensive maniac he seems to be and Lin can play up to his whole potential along with Martin going back to those 26 PPG, we can make a 7th or 8th in the west run.
