I know we all love his heart, desire, defense and ability to do those little things that don't get recorded on a Stat sheet. But is he really a championship contending quality Shooting Guard. Are 12.3ppg, 4.7 rpg and 3.6 apg that he put up last year good enough?? This isn't about these numbers being good enough cause we like the guy or good enough cause he plays D and does the little things or good enough cause he came here for less money but are they good enough to be part of a team that could seriously contend for the title. They are big improvement on years Utah numbers, which were about 7.6 ppg, 2.75 rpg, and 1 apg, now these numbers were in about 20 mins per game and his houston numbers were in 32 minutes per game. Is this increase enough for a 50% increase in minutes?? Will he ever put up big numbers?? For me I'm not sure he ever will, he is a bit like Cato in that they both got used to there roles at their previous team, that is Cato barely got on in portland and didn't adjust last year to actually playing minutes, Anderson too had a very specific role in utah, come give Horny and russell at rest, run the floor, post up, play D and thats it. So what he needs to do this season is breakout and play like a starter and like a player that plays major mintues in the NBA. Smeg ------------------ Discombobulation Imminent
Smeg, I think you make a good point, but to me it comes down to "What role Anderson plays in our offense"? If the predominance of his shots are from spot up 3's, then he may not improve scoring much at all - he just is not that good a long range shooter. If they start running more plays/giving him the ball closer to the basket, as part of a definite theme to get him more involved in the offense, then yes, he will improve. However, if they don't, I don't think he has the flare to create a lot more of shots for himself on a regular basis. The question I ask you, is, do we need him too to be a championship calibre SG? With Francis, Mobley and now Taylor being the guys who create, and for whom most plays will run, do we need Shandon to be doing the same? I think not. ------------------ Current Rocket's Salary & Contract Info
If Steve improves his defense, Shandon will help to create a deadly defensive duo. I don't think Shandon is out there to score. I would like him to continue slash. I would like him to post up when there is a mismatch. I want him to hit his open shots. I want him to be active on the fast breaks. That does not necessarily translate to a lot of points. I don't want Shandon to try to create his own shot. That is Steve's and Mobe's job. There is definently room for improvement, but I like his play so far in his Houston stint. ------------------ I am so exasperated that I could expectorate.
I like his Garbage man Mentality I like it when he gets 12 pts without that many plays run for him Off rebounds. Steals. hussle THeSE are what we ask of him I think if we ask for more . . He will do more. Rocket River ------------------
Wasn't Elie the starting 2-guard for San Antonio the year they won it? It's all about the Law of Diminishing Returns. You can only fully utilitize a certain number of superstars before one or more are being underutilized as a result of overlapping strengths. Maybe too many players in the post, so you have to alternate shots, or one sacrifices rebounds to the other. Maybe minutes have to reduces in order to get another star on the court. Shandon is solid, and a team player. Francis is one star. Maybe Taylor will emerge. If anything, I'd see how the season plays out. If Taylor doesn't work out, maybe we go after another star at the 4, maybe we go after a solid 4 and a star at the 3. I don't think any star-acquisition is necessary until we see how this group plays together. ------------------ "There's 1,000 different things we're looking at, but there's not a lot of things there." -- Rudy T., apparently after taking a hit of acid.

Every good team needs a hustle man, and Shandon is our man. Look at Kurt Rambis and the old Showtime Lakers. I mean, obviously the guy wasn't the most talented guy on the floor, but the Lakers wouldn't have been the same without him. In the Rockets peak in the 90's, we had Mario Elie. And in a different way Robert Horry found a way to get a lot done off the statsheet. Heck, the Bulls had guys like Horace Grant and Rodman. Etc, etc... But not all hustle guys have to be forwards. Shandon scores on his own, and doesn't sit around waiting for things to happen. But he's smart enough to play within the system. He showed last season that he can score when called upon. But I don't think he'll be our first or second or even third option on offense with Steve, Cat, and Mo... Like Davo said, what kind of role are we asking for here? I'm content right now with his defense and selective high percentage shooting. As long as he keeps his energy up, he's doing everything we need him to. ------------------ "There are three kinds of lies: Lies, Damned Lies, and STATISTICS..." - Mark Twain -
Shandon increased his scoring average every month last year, averaging 17pts per game in April. I doubt he'll do that next year, but I don't think 15 is beyond his reach. Shandon is the "most complete" player Houston has. ------------------ Shandon Anderson rocks. The lottery sucks. Playoffs 2001.
Shandon is perfect for the Rockets in my opinion. Much of this is due to the fact this guy has so much stamina that he can deliver 45 quality minutes when called upon. The other part is that Francis and Mobley mesh very well with him and allow him to assume an offensive role he can excel at. That is why he is perfect, and why we need to keep all three. I don't need a prototype scoring-machine SG, when we have the best 3-guard tandem in the business, and may likely compete with history in this regard. What we need to do is keep these 3 guards and choose an offensive system to suit them and get players that fit that system. Like a great PF or C. What we don't need is a SG or SF. This is a great guard tandem. Perfect in my opinion, (assuming Francis and Mobley get better defensively). Who thinks the longest running argument at cc.net will end up being..."we need a SF and must release one of our guards"....won't happen if I know my Rudy. ------------------ who has tickets
Nice replys all, and a good training session. HP said , Who thinks the longest running argument at cc.net will end up being..."we need a SF and must release one of our guards"....won't happen if I know my Rudy. If we use our draft picks wisely as scored a SF stud, that will merit starting not neccessarily next year but the year after then you have to wondering how Rudy will deal with this. At that stage there will be 4 players wanting and deserving starters minutes fighting for 3 positions, so who knows?? Smeg ------------------ Discombobulation Imminent
I see smeg is almost in game shape with this thread Shandon is the type of player that does whatever it takes to win. If Francis or Mobley or Wiz are having an off night shooting wise, Shandon will provide scoring. If we need rebounding help, Shandon is your man. Last season the Rockets were a bad defensive team. Shandon concentrated mostly on the defense (and he was the only one to do so) This season if the Rockets improve on defense as a team, I look for Shandon's offensive number to improve as well. ------------------ In order to be a success in life, you need 2 things: 1. Don't tell everything you know.
IMO, Shandon isn't a numbers kinda guy. I mean he isn't going out looking to be the games top scorer. He is what, dare I say, Pippen was with MJ. He is a well rounded player that can score, pass, rebound and play a little "D". At the beginning of last season, Shandon looked out of place, as did The Wizard. Over the course of the season both players began to find their niche with the team and started to blend into the team's chemistry. Shandon is becoming a complete package...an all around good, fundamental basketball player and given this will be his second season starting, I expect many of his munbers, especially his scoring average, to increase. ------------------ Too often, we lose sight of life's simple pleasures. smeggy, can you believe I actually got in a good workout in a fantasy stat thread. I'm feeling good. when's the next workout. ------------------ who has tickets
Oh, I wanted to ask, is he the only player in the NBA, now that Rodman is gone, that has a part on his face pierced(chin)? ------------------ Too often, we lose sight of life's simple pleasures. This was his first year starting in the NBA! His numbers aren't going to stay the same for the rest of his career. Is he good enough to be a starter on a great team, of course he is. The numbers are irrelevant. Just watch the man play. Were Kenny Smith's numbers good enough to be a starter on a championship club? Obviously so.
A case could be made that Shandon's stats only improved due to playing time. Not entirely true... last season was his 2nd best career shooting % and 3pt%...his BEST FT% season..his assist avg nearly tripled... IMHO Shandon earns his $ and then some... A healthy Dream also benefits SA as it opens up the lane for drives. ------------------ GATER
Anderson doesnt need to step up at all. He just needs to maintain the level of play he exhibited at the end of last season. He does all the little things that dont show up in the stat sheets which is what every team needs, a hard nosed player who does what it takes to win and never b****es about his role on the team. Lets remember he signed for 2 mil a year far below his market value and he's the perfect compliment to cuttino. When Rudy wants to turn up the D he'll put in shandon and when he wants the jumpstart the offense he'll throw in CAT. Anderson is perfect for the rockets. ------------------
well it seems shandon is the favorite subject of this board. it is pretty obvious why. he is the one player that dosnt OBVIOUSLY have a permanent/semi-perminant place in the starting 5. true nothing is permanent. but maby guarenteed long term employment with the rockets is the better way to put it. I think its obvious that the Rockets have a long term PG, and a capable backup for years to come. the Rockets obviously have long term plans for Mobley at the SG. it is my beleif that the rockets are using anderson as a quality team player for a few years at bargain basement prices while making sure they can finda long term SG and SF. we have found that SG. now hoping langhi or walt is the SF of the future, i bet we will se anderson move. anderson is gonna cost us some real dollars when his current contract is up. we are NOT gonna sing another fairly expensive SG. there is no reason. i dont think we will spend 5-6 mill for a SF of andersons size and skill. i bet we trade anderson away after this year(im sure he will put up good enough numbers for us to get something REALLY good for him). its a shame, but bet we will know who our SF of the future will be by the end of the season. the team is already commited to francais, mobley, and cato. i wouldnt be suprised if taylor has an under the table contract already. so now it comes time for the SF spot. i beleive anderson could get that SF spot, but i would rather put mu money on walt or langhi. i know you may be thinking that im on crack, well im not, the rockets may keep anderson on long term, but i doubt he will be making the kind of money he deserves. not to mention the $$ he could get on the free agent market. so count on seing anderson get alot of minutes. this will pad his stats so management can make a better deal. *PEACE ------------------
