    FALLS CHURCH, Va. (AP) -- Police say an 83-year-old woman was attacked by a rabid beaver while swimming in a lake in Fairfax County.

    The attack occurred Tuesday evening in Lake Barcroft in the Bailey's Crossroads section of the county. Police say the woman was bitten several times and swam to shore while the animal was still attacking her. A witness hit the beaver with a tree branch and threw a fishing net over it.

    The beaver was euthanized and tested positive for rabies.

    Police spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell says beaver attacks are rare in the county.
