The White House disavowed the statement at 10:10PM ET in a statement to Politico, 15 minutes before Mitt Romney decided to make his stupid statement ahead of schedule (he was previously supposed to wait till midnight to make a statement).

I think what Hilary said sums it up best. Every time Romney opens his mouth with regard to foreign policy, I get the distinct feeling that America is on a path toward another unnecessary war. Why should the statement be disavowed? If an ambassador to the US condemned hateful, anti-American movies made in his country because he didn't want to strain relations with his host country, would you take issue with that because its somehow anti-free speech?

The embassy did not "apologize" for anything. It condemned the film, and the statement was made as a desperate attempt to save the lives of precious Americans working there who were in danger.
